Objective: To explore the distribution of serum antibodies against human papillomavirus (HPV) 16/18 among women at high-risk for cervical cancer.

Methods: All women when tested positive for anyone of the cervical cancer screening programs, from Xinmi county of Henan province in 2011, were recruited as the subjects of this study. Cervical exfoliated cells were collected, using cervical brush for HPV DNA testing, and 10 ml venous blood was drawn for HPV-16, 18 serum antibodies testing, by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

The synthesis of plasmonic nanorattles with accessible electromagnetic hotspots that facilitate highly sensitive detection of chemical analytes using surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is demonstrated. Background/aims: This study aims to identify the optimal mini-invasive treatment for extrahepatic bile duct stones.

Methodology: One hundred and seventy eight patients with EHBD stones were randomized into 4 groups: laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) and laparoscopic common bile duct exploration (LCBDE) plus T-tube drainage (group LT), LC and LCBDE with endonasobiliary drainage (ENBD) tube (group LE), and endoscopic sphincterotomy with ENBD followed by LC (group EE) and T-tube drainage of open CBDE (group OT). Demographic data, perioperative findings, postoperative outcomes, hospital expense, gastrointestinal quality of life index (GIQLI) scores and cost per quality-adjusted life year (QALY) were analyzed.

L-Norephedrine, a natural plant alkaloid, possesses similar activity as ephedrine and can be used as a vicinal amino alcohol for the asymmetric synthesis of a variety of optically pure compounds, including pharmaceuticals, fine chemicals, and agrochemicals. Because of the existence of two asymmetric centers, efficient synthesis of L-norephedrine has been challenging. In the present study, an R-selective pyruvate decarboxylase from Saccharomyces cerevisiae and an S-selective ω-transaminase from Vibrio fluvialis JS17 were coupled to develop a sequential process for the stereoselective biosynthesis of L-norephedrine.

In order to calculate the ground movement induced by displacement piles driven into horizontal layered strata, an axisymmetric model was built and then the vertical and horizontal ground movement functions were deduced using stochastic medium theory. Results show that the vertical ground movement obeys normal distribution function, while the horizontal ground movement is an exponential function. Utilizing field measured data, parameters of these functions can be obtained by back analysis, and an example was employed to verify this model.

Spatial-temporal realism is often missing in many studies of multitrophic interactions, which are conducted at a single time frame and/or involving interactions between insects with a single species of plant. In this scenario, an underlying assumption is that the host-plant species is ubiquitous throughout the season and that the insects always interact with it. We studied interactions involving three naturally occurring wild species of cruciferous plants, Brassica rapa, Sinapis arvensis and Brassica nigra, that exhibit different seasonal phenologies, and a multivoltine herbivore, the large cabbage white butterfly, Pieris brassicae, and its gregarious endoparasitoid wasp, Cotesia glomerata.

Dendritic cell (DC)-T cell interactions that underlie inducible/adaptive regulatory T cell generation and airway tolerance are not well understood. In this study, we show that mice lacking CD11c(hi) lung DCs, but containing plasmacytoid DCs (pDCs), fail tolerization with inhaled Ag and cannot support Foxp3 induction in vivo in naive CD4(+) T cells. CD103(+) DCs from tolerized mice efficiently induced Foxp3 in cocultured naive CD4(+) T cells but pDCs and lung macrophages failed to do so.

Lapatinib is a dual tyrosine kinase inhibitor of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and human EGFR-2 (HER2) tyrosine kinase domains. To explore the potential utility of lapatinib for the treatment of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), we examined the expression profiles of EGFR and HER2 in tumor tissues and in paired adjacent non-neoplastic tissues from patients with ESCC. We evaluated the antitumor effects of lapatinib alone or in combination with oxaliplatin or 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) on a panel of primary ESCC cells in vitro with various levels of EGFR and HER2 expression.

The association of polymorphisms of CTLA gene with type 1 diabetes (T1D) has widely been reported; however, the results are inconsistent.
