Article Synopsis
  • Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally, and the enzyme CAD plays a significant role in its development, although its specific function in HCC was previously unclear.
  • Analysis of data from 424 HCC cases showed that high CAD levels correlate with poor patient prognosis and are linked to immune response dynamics, indicating that CAD levels can influence treatment sensitivity to certain therapies.
  • Further experiments revealed that knocking down CAD reduced HCC cell growth and migration, suggesting that CAD acts as an oncogene in HCC progression and could serve as a valuable target for future treatments.

Article Synopsis
  • Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common cancer worldwide, and this study explores the relationship between a specific type of cell death called disulfidptosis and long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in HCC to find new biomarkers for immune response and prognosis.
  • The research integrated transcriptomic data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) to identify disulfidptosis-associated lncRNAs and created a predictive model using advanced statistical analyses, which was then tested for its effectiveness in understanding immune response and drug sensitivity.
  • The resulting model identified four key lncRNAs with strong diagnostic potential for HCC, suggesting that it could help personalize immunotherapy and improve treatment decisions for patients by considering their

Background: Immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI), coupled with systemic chemotherapy, may enhance the clinical benefit of cancer by potentiating antitumor immunity, but its efficacy and safety are not clear in advanced intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC). This study aims to assess the efficacy and safety of camrelizumab plus gemcitabine and oxaliplatin (GEMOX) for the treatment of advanced ICC in the real world.

Methods: Advanced ICC patients receiving at least one session of camrelizumab plus GEMOX combination treatment from March 2020 to February 2022 at two high-volume centers were considered eligible.

In order to meet the growing needs for the laser technology and optics industries, the goal is to find suitable fundamental building blocks with large nonlinear-optical (NLO) coefficients and birefringence for an excellent-performance NLO or birefringent system. Via preliminary investigations and calculations, it has been found that the planar π-conjugated group (CHO) possesses large polarizability anisotropy (δ) and hyperpolarizability (β), comparable to well-known groups such as (BO), (CNO), etc. Herein, we report a new alkali-metal 3,5-dicarboxybenzoate, KCHO(HO) (KHBTC), which crystallized in the acentric space group 2.

The combination of organic and inorganic nonlinear active units to obtain organic-inorganic hybrid materials has been proved to be a very effective method to obtain nonlinear optical (NLO) materials with excellent properties. Herein we reported two hybrid melamine-based compounds, namely, acentric (CHN)(HPO)(HPO)·4HO () and centrosymmetric (CHN)SO·2HO (), which were synthesized via facile solvent evaporation method. Compound features a three-dimensional (3D) network structure composed of [(HPO)(HPO)(HO)] layers which are further linked with [(CHN)] layers via hydrogen bonds.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on comparing the long-term outcomes of liver resection (LR) and transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) complicated by bile duct tumor thrombus (BDTT).
  • Analysis included 145 HCC patients with BDTT, where the LR group showed significantly longer overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) than the TACE group both before and after statistical adjustment for other factors.
  • The conclusion emphasizes that if surgery is an option, liver resection is a more effective treatment for improving prognosis in HCC patients with BDTT compared to TACE.

A novel mixed-anion NLO crystal, namely, Bi4O(I3O10)(IO3)3(SeO4), containing a brand-new "pinwheel-like" I3O105- polyiodate anion group was constructed from the trimeric condensation of IO43- monomers. Bi4O(I3O10)(IO3)3(SeO4) exhibits a complex 3D topological structure and gives a moderate second harmonic generation (SHG) signal about 1.1 times that of KH2PO4 (KDP).

  • A new second harmonic generation material, LiMg(IO) (LMIO), is created by substituting elements in LiM(IO) (where M can be Ti, Sn, or Ge) and adjusting the crystal structure for optimal alignment of (IO) groups.
  • LMIO demonstrates a highly efficient SHG effect, measuring about 24 times that of KDP under 1064 nm laser light, surpassing the performance of previously known materials like α-LiIO.
  • The incorporation of magnesium increases the band gap to 4.34 eV and results in a reduced absorption edge of 285 nm, illustrating the effectiveness of aliovalent substitution in developing new SHG materials.

The first examples of rare-earth polyiodates, namely, REI O (RE=Y and Gd), have been prepared by hydrothermal reactions of RE O and H IO in H PO (≥85 wt % in H O), with extremely high yields (>95 %). They crystalize in the polar space group Cm and feature a brand-new semicircle-shaped [I O ] pentameric polyiodate anion composed of two IO and three IO polyhedra. Remarkably, both compounds exhibit very large second-harmonic generation (SHG) signals (14× and 15×KH PO (KDP) upon 1064 nm laser radiation for Y and Gd compounds, respectively).

A new ultraviolet nonlinear optical material, namely LiHgPO, was synthesized using the mild hydrothermal method. The structure of LiHgPO features novel double layers constructed by severely distorted HgO octahedra and PO tetrahedra, which are further interconnected by LiO tetrahedra to form a three-dimensional structure. LiHgPO exhibits a very strong second harmonic generation (SHG) response of 11.

Partial substitution of iodate anions in La(IO) by OH or NO anion led to acentric La(IO)(OH) and chiral La(IO)(NO). The structure of La(IO)(OH) can be seen as a complex three-dimensional (3D) network composed of two-dimensional [La(IO)(OH)] cationic layers that are further bridged by remaining iodate anions, or alternatively as a 3D network composed of one-dimensional [La(IO)(OH)] cationic columns being further interconnected by additional iodate anions, while the structure of La(IO)(NO) can be seen as a novel 3D structure with planar NO groups serving as linkage between the [La(IO)] triple layers. Compared to La(IO), both compounds show considerably wide band gaps and enhanced thermal stability.
