Background/objectives: Perineal injuries, including episiotomies and spontaneous tears, are common complications during childbirth, often leading to significant discomfort and prolonged recovery for women. This retrospective observational cohort study aimed to explore the relationship between antenatal anovaginal distance (AVD) and the incidence of perineal injuries in a cohort of pregnant women evaluated for pelvic floor health at 28 to 32 weeks of gestation.

Methods: Conducted at the University Hospital of Padua over 18 months, the study included 416 women who underwent vaginal delivery at term.

This retrospective analysis investigated the impact of preparation of the pelvic floor for childbirth with stretching balloons and perineal massage on the risk of pelvic floor injuries. : We analyzed 150 primiparous women who accessed private clinics in Padua (Italy) in the period 2019-2023 regarding the rate of perineal trauma and postpartum dysfunction across three groups: the balloon stretching group (BSG, N = 50, 33.3%), the perineal massage group (PMG, N = 39, 26.

The application of the Radon (Rn) deficit technique using subsurface soil gas probes for the identification and quantification of light non-aqueous phase liquids (LNAPL) has provided positive outcomes in recent years. This study presents an alternative method for applying this technique in the headspace of groundwater monitoring wells. The developed protocol, designed for groundwater monitoring wells with a portion of their screen in the vadose zone, is based on the use of portable equipment that allows rapid measurement of the Rn soil gas activity in the vadose zone close to the water table (i.

Ecological risk assessment (ERA) is defined as an iterative process that evaluates the likelihood of adverse ecological effects resulting from exposure to one or more stressors. Although ERA is recognized as a valuable procedure to better address efforts and strategies for site remediation, in Europe a common framework for the implementation of ERA in the management of contaminated sites is lacking. In Italy, there are no legally binding provisions regulating the direct assessment of potential likelihood of ecological risks.

Purpose: To assess objective and subjective outcomes of distal interphalangeal joint arthrodesis with a headless compression screw for degenerative osteoarthritis.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 102 cases of distal interphalangeal joint arthrodesis performed with headless compression screws on 59 patients. We included only primary cases of degenerative osteoarthritis with a minimum follow-up of 7 months.

Treatment of painful neuromas of the upper limb has been largely debated. The current surgical treatments spare from simple neuroma excision to proximal nerve stump relocation (into muscles, veins, and bones). Perineural fat grafting consists of neuroma excision and the creation of an autologous adipose graft wrapped around the proximal nerve stump.

Trapeziometacarpal prosthesis by metallic implant is used to treat thumb carpometacarpal osteoarthritis. Many causes of failure have been described whereas revision techniques still remain a challenging surgery. In this article, we describe a revision strategy in a failed metallic cemented trapeziometacarpal implant with major first metacarpal shortening.

We report an atypical presentation of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the distal phalanx of the left thumb. On physical examination, there was no clinical evidence of a local lesion, but magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed multiple intraosseous cavities filled with fluid. A biopsy specimen showed a well-differentiated SCC, which was treated by amputation of the distal phalanx.

Purpose: The anatomical features of the posterior compartment of the arm seem to provide the basis to raise one of the smallest free muscular flaps, with minimal donor site morbidity: the medial triceps free flap.

Methods: The anatomic study was carried out on 27 fresh cadaver arms: 7 prepared for corrosion cast, 15 for simple dissection and 5 for dissection after latex injection. Morphological data of the muscle, as well as pedicle constancy and size, were recorded.

We present a rare case of squamous cell carcinoma that arose deeply in the abdominal wall, 10 years after abdominal dermolipectomy and wall repair by dermal-adipose graft was performed. The patient presented a 10-cm-diameter subcutaneous tumor that was ulcerated on its superficial aspect, adherent to deep tissues. After histologic examination, we tried to remove the neoplastic mass in a radical way.

Nasogastric intubation has become a frequently used method for alleviating gastrointestinal symptoms. Necrosis from alar pressure during prolonged nasogastric and nasotracheal intubation is common, and can result in considerable deformity if it is unrecognized. The reconstruction of full-thickness alar wounds often requires multiple challenging surgical procedures.

Merkel cell carcinomas are uncommon malignant tumors thought to originate from the neuroendocrine cells of the skin that mainly affects sun-exposed body areas, particularly the head and neck. In approximately 10% of cases, they present with localized lymphadenopathy without any clinical evidence or history of a primary lesion, but a truly primary lymph node Merkel cell carcinoma may occur, possibly originating from epithelial inclusions or an anomalous neuroendocrine differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells. It has been observed that Merkel cell carcinoma is more likely to affect patients whose immune status is impaired as a result of iatrogenic immunosuppression, human immunodeficiency virus infection, or hematological malignancies.
