The 2023 dengue outbreak in Lombardy, Italy: A one-health perspective.

Introduction: Here we reported the virological, entomological and epidemiological characteristics of the large autochthonous outbreak of dengue (DENV) occurred in a small village of the Lombardy region (Northern Italy) during summer 2023.

Methods: After the diagnosis of the first autochthonous case on August 18, 2023, public health measures, including epidemiological investigation and vector control measures, were carried out. A serological screening for DENV antibodies detection was offered to the population.

Dynamics of viral DNA shedding and culture viral DNA positivity in different clinical samples collected during the 2022 mpox outbreak in Lombardy, Italy.

Background: Mpox virus (MPXV) has recently spread outside of sub-Saharan Africa. This large multicentre study was conducted in Lombardy, the most densely populated Italian region accounting for more than 40% of Italian cases. The present study aims to: i) evaluate the presence and the shedding duration of MPXV DNA in different body compartments correlating the MPXV viability with the time to onset of symptoms; ii) provide evidence of MPXV persistence in different body compartment as a source of infection and iii) characterize the MPXV evolution by whole genome sequencing (WGS) during the outbreak occurred in Italy.

The prognostic role of the pre-treatment neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and tumor depth of invasion (DOI) in early-stage squamous cell carcinomas of the oral tongue.

The appropriate surgical management of early-stage oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC) remains a debated topic. The aim of this study is to investigate the role of the pre-treatment neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and tumor depth of invasion (DOI) in predicting the presence of occult neck metastases in early-stage OTSCC. A retrospective analysis of patients affected by early-stage (cT1-T2 cN0) OTSCC who were submitted to elective neck dissection (END) was performed.

Outcomes after eye-sparing surgery vs orbital exenteration in patients with lacrimal gland carcinoma.

Background: This study examined whether eye-sparing surgery is associated with better or worse outcomes than exenteration for the treatment of lacrimal gland carcinomas.

Methods: Forty-six patients treated for lacrimal gland carcinoma were retrospectively reviewed and compared. A statistical analysis was performed using Kaplan-Meier plots.

Epidemiological Analysis of Venous Malformation of the Orbit.

Orbital venous malformation (OVM) is one of the most common orbital mass of adults, accounting for approximately 5% to 15% of all vascular abnormalities in the central nervous system and representing 9% of orbital lesions. Clinical presentation is variable from asymptomatic cases to symptomatic ones. The purpose of the authors' work is to analyze OVM incidence and prevalence in a cohort of patients referred over the last 40 years to the Orbital Unit, tertiary center for orbital diseases.

Background: Optimum management of clinically negative neck (cN0) remains controversial in early stage (T1-T2) squamous cell cancer of the oral tongue (OTSCC). The purpose of this study was to investigate the value of pre-treatment Neutrophil-to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in predicting occult cervical metastasis in stage I and II OTSCC.

Methods: We carried out a retrospective chart review on 110 patients suffering from early stage OTSCC who were surgically treated with tumour excision and elective neck dissection (END).

The Influence of Socioeconomic Factors on the Epidemiology of Maxillofacial Fractures in Southern Italy.

Maxillofacial fractures represent a serious public health problem. Their epidemiology is extremely variable and its analysis is crucial to establish effective treatment and prevention of these injuries. The aim of this multicentric retrospective study was to analyze causes, demographics, incidence, characteristics of 987 patients diagnosed with maxillofacial trauma between 2011 and 2015 at Complex Operative Unit of Maxillofacial Surgery of Federico II University of Naples and Magna Graecia University of Catanzaro, Italy; 657 male and 310 female patients were admitted in the study.
