Introduction: Internal fixation in not-comminuted oblique and transverse olecranon fractures is commonly performed with tension band wiring. However, despite its high healing rate, this technique is associated with a high rate of complications, often requiring the removal of fixation devices in up to 80 % of cases. The aim of our study was to describe a surgical technique using eyelet pins that maintains the effectiveness of the classic tension band wiring while reducing intolerance or displacement of the fixation devices.

Fractures in patients affected by HIV are more frequent than what is reported in patients with no retroviral diseases. Chronic infection with HIV likely contributes to increased systemic inflammation, which has been associated with increased rates of fracture.  We report a case of a 56-year-old male (HIV + in treatment with Atripla) heavy worker, at the beginning affected by intra-articular proximal humerus fracture treated with endoprosthesis replacement and later by periprosthetic fracture treated with plate, screws and cerclages.

Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), the two major forms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), are chronic inflammatory conditions, characterized by a microvascular and also macrovascular involvement. Chronically inflamed intestinal microvessels of IBD patients have demonstrated significant alterations in their physiology and function compared with vessels from healthy and uninvolved IBD intestine. Recently, some studies have revealed that the poor mucosal healing, refractory inflammatory ulcerations and damage in the IBD intestine could depend on microvascular dysfunction, resulting in diminished vasodilatory capacity and tissue hypoperfusion in the IBD gut.

Intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-1 is a single-chain cell surface glycoprotein that plays an important role in the recruitment of leukocytes at sites of inflammation and is up-regulated in intestinal mucosa of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic transmural inflammation that may involve any part of the alimentary tract. The affected patients show peculiar metabolic characteristics; they often have a reduced body weight, due to reduction of lipid stores (in spite of lean mass depletion) and an increased utilization of lipids as fuel substrate. An alteration of nutritional status, up to real malnutrition, is common in CD and malnutrition's effects influence the course of disease, acting as independent factors.
