Background: Limited knowledge and practice of contraception is a global public health problem. Unintended pregnancies are the primary cause of induced abortion. When safe abortions are not available, as in Nigeria with restricted abortion laws, abortion can contribute significantly to maternal mortality and morbidity.

Objective: To document women's experience of menopause in rural communities in Orlu, Eastern Nigeria, and to compare this with urban centers in Nigeria and worldwide.
Methods: A total of 349 women who had not menstruated for at least 12 months were included in a questionnaire-based study. The questionnaire included questions on sociodemographic characteristics, age at menarche and menopause, attitude to menopause, and knowledge and use of hormone replacement therapy.

The outcome of labour in 177 Nigerian primigravidae in whom clinical pelvic assessment was performed before delivery, is studied. No significant difference occurred in the mode of delivery for the rank of the pelvic assessors (consultants or resident doctors) at x = 0.05.
