Article Synopsis
  • Acute arboviral infections, especially dengue, affect millions in tropical regions, with Asia being the most impacted; Bangladesh faced a major outbreak in 2019, prompting an extensive study in Dhaka.
  • The study, conducted across three medical centers, involved nearly 2000 participants to explore clinical variations in severe dengue and to identify serotypes, enhancing understanding of the virus's behavior.
  • Results indicated that severe cases were predominantly in younger males, with digestive symptoms more common in severe cases, while a small percentage of patients experienced fatal outcomes, highlighting the serious health and socioeconomic burden of dengue.

Objectives: Dengue emerged as a significant health threat in endemic regions in recent years. However, inconsistent diagnostic accuracy in sequential dengue infections necessitate improved testing methods to ensure effective management of dengue cases. Here, we evaluated a portable, rapid, and sensitive molecular assay-reverse transcriptase recombinase polymerase amplification assay (RT-RAA)-utilizing a mobile suitcase laboratory to detect infections in suspected dengue cases in Bangladesh.

Objectives: Irrational and injudicious use of antibiotics in COVID-19 patients could be detrimental in a tropical country with a weak antibiotic stewardship policy such as Bangladesh. This study aimed to focus on the antibiotic usage patterns in COVID-19 patients in Bangladesh.

Methods: This prospective observational study was performed from July 2020 to June 2021 in five tertiary hospitals in Bangladesh.

Article Synopsis
  • There are treatments for a disease called visceral leishmaniasis (VL), but sometimes it can come back in some patients even after they seem cured.
  • This case talks about a 19-year-old girl from Bangladesh who had VL return after being treated multiple times, but doctors used a new approach to help her.
  • After following a special treatment plan, she stayed healthy and didn't have any more relapses for a whole year after finishing her treatment.

Objective: Obesity and type 2 diabetes (DM) are risk factors for severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outcomes, which disproportionately affect South Asian populations. This study aims to investigate the humoral and cellular immune responses to SARS-CoV-2 in adult COVID-19 survivors with overweight/obesity (Ov/Ob, BMI ≥ 23 kg/m2) and DM in Bangladesh.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, SARS-CoV-2-specific antibody and T-cell responses were investigated in 63 healthy and 75 PCR-confirmed COVID-19 recovered individuals in Bangladesh, during the pre-vaccination first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

Introduction: Deliberate self-poisoning (DSP) is an important cause of hospital admissions and subsequent mortality. We conducted a cross-sectional observational study in a tertiary-level teaching hospital situated in the northeastern part of Bangladesh to analyze the psychosocial factors responsible for DSP.

Methods: This cross-sectional observational study was carried out among patients with DSP admitted to the medicine ward from January to December 2017, irrespective of gender, except for cases involving poisoning due to spoiled food, food contaminated by infectious organisms, poisoning by venomous animals, and street poisoning (commuter or travel-related poisoning).

Background: Dengue-COVID-19 coinfection is one of the greatest emerging challenges in dengue-endemic areas during the continuing pandemic. With coinciding clinical and laboratory pictures, early diagnosis becomes burdensome, with management discrepancy.

Methods: A descriptive study was performed on dengue-COVID-19 coinfected patients during July-August 2021 for an overview of disease progression, severity and outcome.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) may be succeeded by a spectrum of complications, including invasive fungal infections (IFIs). Here, we describe a case of rhino-orbital mucormycosis in a recovered coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) patient with underlying non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). Our patient was normotensive, non-diabetic, presenting with multiple non-healing ulcers on different parts of the body.

Background: Although the prevalence of HIV is low in Bangladesh, there is a potential for an increased number of cases. This is because of high cross-border mobility (India and Myanmar) of people and increased injection drug abusers amongst youth in the cities and rural areas, HIV can present in many ways, from asymptomatic to advanced disease, including various atypical (generalized itching) and advanced (loss of vision) manifestations. A high degree of suspicion is required to diagnose HIV in a country like Bangladesh.

The clinical presentation of COVID-19 is varied: from asymptomatic to severe neurological syndrome like stroke can happen. Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) as a manifestation of COVID-19 is not very common. GBS is an acute immune-mediated polyradiculoneuropathy that usually occurs following previous exposure to infection.

Bangladesh is one of the top-ten most heavily burdened countries for viral hepatitis, with hepatitis B (HBV) infections responsible for the majority of cases. Recombinant and occult HBV infections (OBI) have been reported previously in the region. We investigated an adult fever cohort (=201) recruited in Dhaka, to determine the prevalence of HBV and OBI.

Organophosphorus (OP) compounds remain a leading cause of self-poisoning and mortality, especially in South East Asia, China, and Africa. Organophosphorus causes an acute cholinergic syndrome by inhibiting acetylcholinesterase. Atropine remains the mainstay of treatment, but recently some promising therapies are in the pipeline.

To identify the appropriate effective dose of CP therapy in severe patients b. To identify the efficacy of the therapy with their end point based on clinical improvement within seven days of treatment or until discharge whichever is later and in-hospital mortality c.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a serious global health problem currently affecting over 450 million people worldwide. Defining its interaction with major global infections is an international public health priority. Melioidosis is caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, an exemplar pathogen for studying intracellular bacterial infection in the context of DM due to the 12-fold increased risk in this group.

From April to September 2017, Bangladesh experienced a huge outbreak of acute Chikungunya virus infection in Dhaka. This series describes the clinical and laboratory features of a large number of cases (690; 399 confirmed and 291 probable) suffered during that period. This observational study was carried out at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Bangladesh.

Melioidosis is known to occur in Bangladesh, but there are few reports about the condition in the published international literature. We set out to review all known cases of melioidosis in the country to date, using both retrospective and prospective data. A web-based literature search was conducted to identify all published case reports, original articles and conference abstracts.

Bangladesh is one of the world's most vulnerable countries for climate change. This observational study examined the association of temperature, humidity and rainfall with six common climate-sensitive infectious diseases in adults (malaria, diarrheal disease, enteric fever, encephalitis, pneumonia and bacterial meningitis) in northeastern Bangladesh. Subjects admitted to the adult medicine ward of a tertiary referral hospital in Sylhet, Bangladesh from 2008 to 2012 with a diagnosis of one of the six chosen climate-sensitive infectious diseases were enrolled in the study.

Background: Since Bangladesh government issued a ban on the use of highly toxic WHO Class I pesticides, annual consumption of herbicides like Paraquat have been sharply increasing in the markets. Paraquat poisoning is an emerging public health threat and its high mortality rate is responsible for a significant number of deaths. Diagnostic limitations and unavailable sample at presentation have resulted in under-reporting and lack of awareness among the treating physicians, making Paraquat poisoning one of the most neglected toxicological emergencies.

Background: Treatment of acute organophosphorus (OP) insecticide poisoning is difficult, with many patients dying despite best care. Pre-clinical studies have shown benefit from salbutamol, possibly due speeding alveolar fluid clearance or reducing bronchoconstriction. In this small pilot dose-response study, we aimed to explore whether addition of nebulized salbutamol to standard care might improve resuscitation.
