Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the link between vitamin D deficiency, hyperglycemia, and tuberculosis (TB), proposing that DNA promoter methylation of key genes in the vitamin D metabolic pathway contributes to the susceptibility of co-existing TB and diabetes (TB-DM).
  • By comparing 50 TB-DM patients with 50 healthy subjects, researchers found lower methylation levels in most candidate genes, suggesting their potential as biomarkers for diagnosing TB-DM.
  • The results indicate that lower vitamin D levels correlate with decreased methylation of certain genes and an increased risk of TB-DM, highlighting the role of these genes in the disease's progression, independent of hyperglycemia.
