The importance of evidence for every branch of medicine in teaching in order to orient the practitioners among the great amount of most actual scientific information's, and to support clinical decisions, is well established in health care, including dentistry. The practice of evidence-based medicine is a process of lifelong, self-directed, problem-based learning which leads to the need for clinically important information about diagnosis, prognosis, therapy and other clinical and health care issues. Nowadays the practice of dentistry is becoming more complex and challenging because of the continually changing in dental materials and equipments, an increasingly litigious society, an increase in the emphasis of continuing professional development, the information explosion and the consumer movement associated with advances on the Internet.

Purpose: This study was done to evaluate the use of multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) in the evaluation of jaw osteonecrosis, a recently described medical entity in patients receiving long-term intravenous or oral bisphosphonates, and to help radiologists recognise it to enable early diagnosis and appropriate management.

Material And Methods: Thirty-eight patients with a history of neoplasm (breast, prostate, multiple myeloma, pancreas) or osteoporosis and bisphosphonate use and recent oral surgery who presented with pain in the mouth and temporomandibular joints, soft tissue infections, altered taste and numbness were examined with MDCT.

Results: In all patients, MDCT revealed the presence of structural bony alterations referable to osteonecrosis associated with orosinusal fistula in four of them and bony intraoral spicules in 25.

Bisphosphonates are molecules derived from pyrophosphates, but, unlike pyrophosphates, they are resistant to enzymatic hydrolysis. Bisphosphonates are used in the treatment of Paget's disease, cancer-related osteolysis, myeloma, primary hyperparathyroidism, and osteoporosis. In dialysis patients bisphosphonates may be used to reduce bone pain due to renal osteodystrophy.

Here, we show that an alpha-proteobacterium of the genus Asaia is stably associated with larvae and adults of Anopheles stephensi, an important mosquito vector of Plasmodium vivax, a main malaria agent in Asia. Asaia bacteria dominate mosquito-associated microbiota, as shown by 16S rRNA gene abundance, quantitative PCR, transmission electron microscopy and in situ-hybridization of 16S rRNA genes. In adult mosquitoes, Asaia sp.

In order to define a practical method for a quantitative-qualitative analysis of dental hard tissue cells, we have studied cementocytes of human teeth using Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM), a research technique based on laser light microscopic analysis of biological samples stained for fluorescence observation. One thousand and eight hundred cementocyte images were analyzed. CLSM allowed improved tissue imaging, bi-dimensional pictures with better resolution at cellular level and, in particular, the possibility of a three-dimensional image reconstruction, thus providing a dynamic view of the cell under different situations.

Traumatic ulcerative granuloma with stromal eosinophilia is an ulcerated oral lesion which pathogenesis is still unclear. Clinically, this disease is characterized by the presence of chronic ulcerative lesions with elevated and indurated borders in the oral mucosa. It usually develops rapidly and persists for several weeks or months, it presents mainly on the tongue but other areas such as gingival, cheek and vestibular mucosa may also be involved.

Pink teeth have most often been observed in victims of drowning but have also been reported in subjects who died suddenly and unnaturally. There is general agreement that there is no obvious connection between the occurrence of pink teeth and the cause of death, but the condition of the surroundings (especially humidity) must certainly play an important role in the development of the pink-tooth phenomenon. The frequency and distribution of postmortem pink coloration of the teeth have been studied among a representative sample of 52 cadavers.

Judging from recent data, heritable forms account for 30-40% of pheochromocytomas. The molecular basis for the familial pheochromocytoma has been largely elucidated and the role of germline mutation of the VHL, RET, SDHB, and SDHD genes has been established. However, on genotyping a group of 172 sporadic or familial pheochromocytomas, we characterized four unrelated probands with familial pheochromocytomas without any sequence variants of RET (exons 8, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, and 16) or the entire coding sequence of VHL, SDHB, SDHC, SDHD, and EGLN3 (exon-intron boundaries included).

Background: Osseointegrated endosseous implants are widely used for the rehabilitation of completely and partially edentulous patients, being the final prosthodontic treatment more predictable and the failures extremely infrequent. A case of fracture of an endosseous dental implant, replacing the maxillary first molar, occurring in a middle-age woman, 5 years after placement is reported.

Materials And Methods: The difficult management of this rare complication of implant dentistry together with the following rehabilitation is described.

It has been demonstrated that bisphosphonate-based supportive therapy (pamidronate or zoledronate) reduces skeletal events (onset or progression of osteolytic lesions) both in patients with multiple myeloma (MM) and in cancer patients with bone metastasis. Bisphosphonates (eg, alendronate) are also indicated in the treatment of osteoporosis. Nevertheless, osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) has been reported in some patients being treated with bisphosphonates.

Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) represents a recent acquisition in the study of biological samples stained for fluorescence observation. Particularly, this technique allows a bidimensional investigation of tissues and cells with the possibility to elaborate a three-dimensional model. The aim of this study is the use of this technique, as a complementary and not substitutive application of the histological examination, for the morphological and histopathological analysis in a case of mixed complex-composed odontoma.

White sponge naevus (WSN) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder that predominantly affects non-cornified stratified squamous epithelia: oral mucosa, oesophagus, anogenital area. It has been shown to be related to keratin defects, because of mutations in the genes encoding mucosal-specific keratins K4 and K13. We illustrate three cases diagnosed as WSN, following the clinical and histological criteria, with unusual appearance.

Parathyroid carcinoma is uncommon and no reliable histological markers are available for predicting the clinical outcome of patients. The aim of this study was to assess the correlation between survival, histopatological markers, proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), Ki-67 antigen and the expression of the p53 nuclear protein in patients with confirmed parathyroid carcinoma (PC). The routine histological specimens from 15 patients (11 men, 4-women, median age 65 years) with confirmed PC who had died of the disease were reviewed.

The long-term surgical cure rate of patients with primary aldosteronism varies widely, and causes of persistent hypertension are not completely established. We reviewed retrospectively charts from 98 patients (range, 19-70 years old) with aldosterone-producing adenomas who underwent unilateral adrenalectomy. At a median follow-up of 81 months (range, 18-186 months), the mean blood pressure values improved in 95 out of 98 (96.

Incidentally discovered adrenal masses (incidentalomas) are relatively frequent and unsuspected incidentalomas (AI) of more than 1 cm in size may be found in 1-5% of patients who have undergone abdominal or chest computed tomography (CT)-scan for unrelated reasons. Once an AI is detected, the two major questions are whether the patient has biochemical evidence of adrenal hyperfunction, and whether the mass is an adrenal metastasis or a malignant adrenal tumour. In most cases (>90%) AI are non-functioning, with a low (<10%) risk of being malignant, and an estimated cumulative risk of malignant transformation of less than 1:1000.

Untreated hypercortisolism is a fatal state, causing functional disability. Even after successful treatment, clinical recovery is slower than the biochemical one, but data about clinical results, well-being and working capacity after surgery are scarce. This retrospective study aimed at evaluating the long-term outcome of patients after adrenalectomy for ACTH-independent hypercortisolism by the analysis of the clinical results, the survival and the subjective well-being status after surgery.

Background And Aims: Parathyroid carcinoma (PC) is a rare cause of primary hyperparathyroidism. Surgery is the only effective treatment; re-operations are often required, because recurrences occur in most of the cases. The aim of this retrospective study was to analyse the rate of biochemical cure, clinical relief, sensitivity of localizing studies and morbidity after re-operations.
