Hepatic demethylation of methoxy-bromodiphenyl ethers and conjugation of the resulting hydroxy-bromodiphenyl ethers in a marine fish, the red snapper, Lutjanus campechanus, and a freshwater fish, the channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus.

Methoxylated bromodiphenyl ethers (MeO-BDEs), marine natural products, can be demethylated by cytochrome P450 to produce hydroxylated bromodiphenyl ethers (OH-BDEs), potentially toxic metabolites that are also formed by hydroxylation of BDE flame retardants. The OH-BDEs may be detoxified by glucuronidation and sulfonation. This study examined the demethylation of 6-MeO-BDE47, 2'-MeO-BDE68 and 4'-MeO-BDE68, in hepatic microsomes from the red snapper, Lutjanus campechanus, a marine fish likely to be exposed naturally to MeO-BDEs, and the channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, a freshwater fish in which pathways of xenobiotic biotransformation have been studied.

The effect of alterations in foot centre of pressure on lower body kinematics during the five-iron golf swing.

The research aimed to evaluate the effects of an intervention aimed at altering pressure towards the medial aspect of the foot relating to stability mechanisms associated with the golf swing. We hypothesised that by altering the position of the foot pressure, the lower body stabilisation would improve which in turn would enhance weight distribution and underpinning lower body joint kinematics. Eight professional golf association (PGA) golf coaches performed five golf swings, recorded using a nine-camera motion analysis system synchronised with two force platforms.

Effects of Food Natural Products on the Biotransformation of PCBs.

Many food products, particularly fruits and vegetables, contain natural products that affect biotransformation enzymes. These may be expected to affect the rate of biotransformation of PCBs that are metabolized by the affected enzymes. The first step in PCB metabolism is cytochrome P450-dependent monooxygenation.

Increased toxicity of benzo(a)pyrene-7,8-dihydrodiol in the presence of polychlorobiphenylols.

Benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) often co-exist in contaminated environments. Polychlorobiphenylols (OH-PCBs), formed by CYP-dependent monooxygenation of PCBs, are potent inhibitors of the glucuronidation of hydroxylated BaP metabolites. We hypothesized that OH-PCBs could drive the biotransformation of (-)BaP-7,8-dihydrodiol (BaP-7, 8-D) away from detoxication and towards formation of the reactive metabolite.

An accurate block-trimming device for ultramicrotomy of selected cells.

A small instrument is described which is operated on the stage of a light microscope to trim resin-embedded specimens to precise levels for subsequent ultramicrotomy and to cut thin pilot sections for light microscopy. The operating procedure and examples of results are given.
