Purpose: To assess the role of pretreatment multiparametric (mp)MRI-based radiomic features in predicting pathologic complete response (pCR) of locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) to neoadjuvant chemoradiation therapy (nCRT).
Methods: This was a retrospective dual-center study including 98 patients (M/F 77/21, mean age 60 years) with LARC who underwent pretreatment mpMRI followed by nCRT and total mesorectal excision or watch and wait. Fifty-eight patients from institution 1 constituted the training set and 40 from institution 2 the validation set.

Purpose: To assess the accuracy of a machine learning (ML) approach based on magnetic resonance (MR) imaging radiomic quantification obtained before treatment and early after treatment for prediction of early hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) response to yttrium-90 transarterial radioembolization (TARE).
Materials And Methods: In this retrospective single-center study of 76 patients with HCC, baseline and early (1-2 months) post-TARE MR images were collected. Semiautomated tumor segmentation facilitated extraction of shape, first-order histogram, and custom signal intensity-based radiomic features, which were then trained (n = 46) using a ML XGBoost model and validated on a separate cohort (n = 30) not used in training to predict treatment response assessed at 4-6 months (based on modified Response and Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors criteria).
Patients recovered from COVID-19 may develop long-COVID symptoms in the lung. For this patient population (post-COVID patients), they may benefit from longitudinal, radiation-free lung MRI exams for monitoring lung lesion development and progression. The purpose of this study was to investigate the performance of a spiral ultrashort echo time MRI sequence (Spiral-VIBE-UTE) in a cohort of post-COVID patients in comparison with CT and to compare image quality obtained using different spiral MRI acquisition protocols.

Liver kinase B1 (LKB1) is involved in several biological processes and is a key regulator of hepatic metabolism and polarity. Here, we demonstrate that the master kinase LKB1 plays a dual role in liver regeneration, independently of its major target, AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). We found that the loss of hepatic Lkb1 expression promoted hepatocyte proliferation acceleration independently of metabolic/energetic balance.

It examines the constellation of various diverse health-system strengthening interventions deployed by Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Indonesia, and Morocco, among which the scaling up of the pre-service education of midwives was only one element. Efforts in health system strengthening in these countries have been characterised by: expansion of the network of health facilities with increased uptake of facility birthing, scaling up of the production of midwives, reduction of financial barriers, and late attention for improving the quality of care.

Achievement of better health outcomes for women and newborn infants is possible, but needs improvements in the quality of reproductive, maternal, and newborn care, alongside necessary increases in universal coverage. In this report, we propose three priority research areas and outline how national investment in midwives and in their work environment, education, regulation, and management can improve quality of care.

This paper presents the evidence for maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity, and provides the background to the publication of the ground-breaking Global State of the World's Midwifery Report (SoWMy) in 2011. Supported by 30 agencies, the SoWMy provides data gathered from 58 countries on their maternity services, and makes recommendations for improving the care of and services for childbearing women by improving the status, education, and regulation of midwives globally. If governments, policy makers, professional associations, international organizations, donor agencies, and civil society take the recommended steps and invest accordingly, this will effectively lead to an improvement in access to quality midwifery services and maternal and newborn health globally.

We previously showed that AMPKalpha1-/- mice develop moderate anemia associated with splenomegaly and high reticulocytosis. Here, we report that splenectomy of AMPKalpha1-/- mice worsened anemia supporting evidence that AMPKalpha1-/- mice developed a compensatory response through extramedullary erythropoiesis in the spleen.
