Article Synopsis
  • Recent research has enhanced our understanding of the evolutionary history and domestication of the carob tree (Ceratonia siliqua), which is grown for food and fodder in the Mediterranean region.
  • Utilizing over 1,000 microsatellite genotypes and genome-wide data from 3,557 single nucleotide polymorphisms, the study identified seven distinct carob evolutionary units and traced the tree's evolutionary patterns.
  • The findings indicate the carob was mainly domesticated from local wild types and spread through human migration, suggesting conservation efforts should focus on diverse genetic resources in both western and eastern Mediterranean populations.
