Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to evaluate how acceptable, usable, and feasible HIV self-testing is among key populations in Morocco, particularly focusing on female sex workers, men who have sex with men, and partners of newly diagnosed individuals.
  • - A total of 3,465 individuals were involved, with high acceptability rates for self-testing reported (90.2% among female sex workers, 86.2% among men who have sex with men). However, many participants (44.0% to 73.4%) had never been tested for HIV before.
  • - The results suggest that expanding access to HIV self-testing can be beneficial for key populations in Morocco and potentially in other Middle Eastern and North African countries as well. *

Article Synopsis
  • * Out of 373 samples, 27% displayed piroplasm infections, predominantly from Theileria spp. (78 samples) and Babesia spp. (23 samples), with a molecular detection rate of 38%.
  • * The main findings indicated that Theileria ovis was prevalent, while Babesia ovis was the primary cause of Babesiosis, highlighting the importance of molecular diagnostics for accurate identification, especially in co-infection scenarios.

This study investigated the effect of adding various flavors to calf starter concentrates on the performance, behavior, and blood parameters of Holstein dairy calves. The hypothesis was that an optimal flavor enhancer would increase starter intake, improve growth performance, and possibly enable earlier weaning without adverse physiological effects. In Experiment 1, a cafeteria test was conducted with 80 pre-weaned calves to evaluate four synthetic flavor enhancers (salty, sweet, sour, bitter) at levels of 3.

  • The study investigates how tumor PD-L1 expression and distant metastasis affect the effectiveness of immunotherapy in Moroccan patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
  • It analyzed data from 40 patients treated between January 2019 and February 2023, using immunohistochemistry and qPCR to determine cancer markers and expression levels.
  • Results indicated that positive PD-L1 expression correlates with shorter survival rates, while a high metastatic burden significantly lowers treatment response and survival outcomes.

Astrocytes respond and contribute to neuroinflammation by adopting inflammatory reactive states. Although recent efforts have characterized the gene expression signatures associated with these reactive states, the cell biology underlying inflammatory reactive astrocyte phenotypes remains under-explored. Here, we used CRISPR-based screening in human iPSC-derived astrocytes to identify mTOR activation a driver of cytokine-induced endolysosomal system remodeling, manifesting as alkalinization of endolysosomal compartments, decreased autophagic flux, and increased exocytosis of certain endolysosomal cargos.

Strategies for treating progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) remain limited. Here, we found that miR-145-5p is overabundant uniquely in chronic lesion tissues from secondary progressive MS patients. We induced both acute and chronic demyelination in miR-145 knockout mice to determine its contributions to remyelination failure.

TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43) proteinopathy in brain cells is the hallmark of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) but its cause remains elusive. Asparaginase-like-1 protein (ASRGL1) cleaves isoaspartates, which alter protein folding and susceptibility to proteolysis. ASRGL1 gene harbors a copy of the human endogenous retrovirus HML-2, whose overexpression contributes to ALS pathogenesis.

Ecological niche models (ENMs) serve as valuable tools in assessing the potential species distribution, identifying crucial habitat components for species associations, and facilitating conservation efforts. The current study aimed to investigate the gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) infection in sheep, predict and analyze their ecological niches and ranges, and identify the key bioclimatic variables influencing their distribution across three distinct climatic regions in Iran. In a cross-sectional study, a total of 2140 fecal samples were collected from semi-arid (n = 800), arid (n = 500), and humid-subtropical (n = 840) climates in East Azerbaijan, Kerman, and Guilan provinces, respectively.

  • A study in Iran examined how heat waves (HWs) have impacted mortality from 2015 to 2022 compared to the previous period (2008-2014), revealing an increase in the frequency and duration of HWs, particularly the less severe ones.* -
  • The analysis found that the relative risk (RR) of mortality was mainly associated with weak and low-severity heat waves during the later period, with a notable impact on vulnerable groups such as women and older adults.* -
  • The findings indicate a pressing need for effective strategies to address the rising risk from heat waves, while also calling for more detailed research on the effects of severe heat waves, as their impact remains uncertain.*

Breast conservative treatment (BCT) is currently accepted as the standard treatment option for breast cancer. Targeted ultrasound helps detect recurrent lesions, postoperative changes, and scarring tissue. In this pictorial essay, we review the ultrasound features of benign (seroma, hematoma, fat necrosis, traumatic neuroma, fibrosis/scarring) and malignant (recurrence, new primary cancer) causes of palpable lumps after BCT and provide images from our patients to illustrate some typical findings of common pathologies.
