Immune Thrombocytopenia After COVID-19 Vaccine Requiring Splenectomy: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Post-vaccination immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a rare but recognized adverse event believed to result from an autoimmune reaction triggered by the vaccine. This case report presents the fourth documented instance of severe ITP requiring splenectomy following the administration of a COVID-19 vaccine. The patient, a 54-year-old previously healthy female with no familial history of autoimmune or hematological disorders, developed ITP two weeks after the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Spontaneous Stoma Closure: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Stomas serve various purposes, and surgical closure of temporary stomas is typically performed once the underlying reason for their creation has been resolved. However, spontaneous closure of a stoma without surgical intervention is exceptionally rare. Here, we present a case of spontaneous stoma closure.

Mammary myofibroblastoma is a rare benign tumor. It is mainly seen in older men and postmenopausal women. These tumors can be presented with a palpable mass or can be discovered incidentally on routine screening.

Changes in Pharyngeal Airway Space and Oxygen Saturation Following Mandibular Setback Surgery: A Narrative Review.

Orthognathic surgery can alter the dental, skeletal, soft tissue, and dimensional changes in the oropharyngeal region. Studies have shown a posterior positioning of the hyoid bone and tongue position after mandibular setback surgery, this in turn can have a negative influence on the upper airway space that could lead to breathing problems such as obstructive sleep apnea. Mandibular setback surgery is commonly used for functional and aesthetic correction in mandibular prognathism patients.

Approach for Mandibular Reconstruction Using Vascularized Free Fibula Flap: A Review of the Literature.

Mandible reconstruction is one of the major challenges that face any maxillofacial surgeon worldwide. Different approaches and methods are used for mandible reconstruction, including pedicle flaps, titanium reconstruction plates, and bone grafts. A free fibular flap is used commonly and is considered the gold standard in mandibular reconstruction with a good success rate.

Background: Isolated iliac artery aneurysms are rare and difficult to diagnose. It is more common in males. It can be asymptomatic at diagnosis or can present with frank rupture, or symptoms caused by compression on nearby organs.

Predictors of survival from Acinetobacter in Saudi Arabian intensive care units: A prospective, one-year, six-city, ten-center cohort study.

Background: Antibiotic-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii is a continuously-emerging worldwide health crisis, with mortality rates approaching 50% in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. The objective of this study was to evaluate regional, patient-related, and organism-related predictors of survival among critically-ill patients with confirmed Acinetobacter infection.

Methods: This prospective cohort study was conducted within ten ICUs across six geographically- and climatologically-distinct cities across Saudi Arabia over 13 months.

Clival simple bone cyst: Rare pathological entity (case report).

Background: Clival cystic lesions are not frequently seen in neurosurgery. Cystic lesion in the clivus can be part of a neoplastic process such as chordoma, chondrosarcoma, plasmacytoma, or metastasis. Rare types of pure cystic clival lesions include simple bone cysts and arachnoid cysts, which are asymptomatic most of the time and do not cause symptoms until they reach a large size.

Use of methylene blue in pheochromocytoma resection: case report.

We report the use of intravenous Methylene blue to treat the hypotension occurring following adrenal vein ligation in a case of pheochromocytoma resection in a child. The potential benefits and problems, including correct dosage, are discussed.

Morphology and growth of the fetal stomach.

To assess the development of the fetal stomach, we performed 162 esophageal injections of contrast media into spontaneously aborted normal fetuses from 7.5 to 26 weeks of gestation. The length of esophagus and trunk, greater and lesser curvature, and vertical and oblique axis of stomach were measured, and the means and standard deviations at each gestational age were calculated.

Anatomical and histological observations on the tongue of one-humped camel, Camelus dromedarius.

The camel has a typically elongated mammalian tongue, which tapers to a dorsally flattened tip. The filiform papillae are mostly of the simple type which are scattered over the dorsum and the lateral edges of the tongue. The fungiform papillae are scattered among the filiform papillae.

Reappraisal of age-related morphological changes in the rat thymus--morphometric study.

A quantitative morphometric study, using a routine histological technique, was carried out with 72 rats aged 7 and 15 days, 1, 4 and 9 months and 1 1/2 years. A micrometric eyepiece, calibrated by means of a stage micrometer, was employed for measurement. Change due to aging included loss of septa, increased fatty infiltration, diminished demarcation of the cortex from the medulla and a decrease in the number of Hassall's corpuscles.

Light and electron microscopic observations on the cerebellum of guinea pigs following low-dose methotrexate.

The neurotoxicity of single and divided low-dose methotrexate (MTX) and the rescue effect of leucovorin (folic acid) were investigated by light and electron microscopic examination of the cerebellum of Guinea pigs. One group of animals received a single weekly intraperitoneal MTX in a dose of 10 mg/kg, a second received a similar dose divided into three equal fractions, and the third group received MTX rescued with an equal dose of leucovorin. The results showed degeneration of Purkinje cells indicated by shrinkage and distortion of perikarya, dissolution of mitochondrial cristae, and nuclear and nucleolar changes in all groups which received MTX.

Cholinergic innervation of the cornea and iris of the guinea pig.

Cholinergic innervation of the cornea and iris of the newborn and adult guinea pig was studied by the technique of Karnovsky and Roots (1964). The given structures are both richly innervated. The cholinesterase reaction of the cornea is more strongly positive in adult animals, whereas the intensity of the reaction of the iris in newborn and adult guinea pigs is almost identical.

Transverse diameter of the lumbar spinal canal in normal adult Saudis.

Pathological changes in the diameters of the lumbar spinal canal may be associated with low back pain. The assessment of the size of the canal is therefore an important diagnostic procedure. Evidence suggests that there are ethnic differences in the dimensions of the canal.

Implantation of fetal thymus and sympathetic ganglion within the anterior eye chamber in mice, to study neuro-immune interaction in thymic development.

In this study 13- to 14-day fetal thymic lobes were implanted within the anterior eye chambers in mice either with or without a syngeneic newborn sympathetic ganglion. It was observed after 6 weeks of implantation that the thymic lobes that grew with the ganglia had fewer lymphoid cells than their counterparts which were grown without the ganglia. The cells that developed within the thymic lobes were Thy-1- and peanut agglutinin-positive.

Foetal hepatic calcification.

Thirty-three cases of 1,500 spontaneously-aborted foetuses showed hepatic calcifications. The exact location of these calcifications were confirmed by contrast studies, anatomic dissection, and further histology when necessary. Of them, 18 were calcified hepatic vein thrombi (CHVT), 12 were calcified portal vein thrombi (CPVT), 2 were parenchymal calcifications, and one was mixed.

Fetal necrogram: a new technique. Experience with 12,000 contrast examinations.

The authors describe a new technique "necrogram" for post-mortem fetal investigations that uses ionic contrast media and employs the principles of diffusion and osmosis for clearing the fetus from contrast injection. It was possible to perform subsequent contrast examinations without the problem of overlapping structures. The study was conducted on 1,500 fetuses with more than 12,000 contrast examinations performed, followed by autopsy.

Degeneration of adrenergic nerves in the urinary bladder during pregnancy.

The adrenergic innervation of the urinary bladder of normal female and pregnant rats has been studied using a fluorescence histochemical method. The bladder is richly innervated by adrenergic nerve fibres as is evidenced by the presence of numerous adrenergic nerves in the adventitia, musculosa and submucosa. However, adrenergic nerve cells could not be observed.

Scanning electron microscopic study of the lingual papillae of the one humped camel, Camelus dromedarius.

The dorsum of the camel tongue shows filiform, fungiform, circumvallate and special (wart-like) papillae. Filiform papillae are conical in shape and show different heights and thicknesses at various levels. Fungiform papillae are rounded and are surrounded by robust filiform papillae.

The lumbosacral spines of two fetal and twelve adult cadavers have been studied by dissection. Evidence shows that the fifth lumbar intervertebral foramen is crossed on its external aspect by a strong, cord-like corporotransverse ligament passing obliquely downwards, forwards and medially from the inferior aspect of the accessory process of the fifth lumbar vertebra to the lateral surface of the intervertebral disc and the adjacent parts of the bodies of the fifth and first sacral vertebrae. Superficially, the ligament is related to another flat band--the lumbosacral hood.

Lumbar intervertebral foramina have been studied by dissection of fetal and adult cadaveric spines. The results show that these foramina are crossed by ligaments which subdivide the opening into smaller compartments for the structures traversing it. At L1-L4, there appears to be a basic pattern of arrangement of the ligaments.

Partial degeneration of autonomic nerves of the heart of methotrexate-treated guinea pigs.

In the present investigation partial degeneration of adrenergic and cholinergic nerves of the heart of guinea pigs following methotrexate treatment has been reported. No appreciable change was observed in the autonomic nerve fibres after 3 days of treatment. However, after prolonged treatment some nerve fibres showed signs of degeneration and a few adrenergic and cholinergic nerve fibres had disappeared.

Thymic lymphopoiesis and cholinergic innervation.

This study was carried out to determine whether the thymic rudiments implanted into the anterior eye chambers of syngenic hosts receive cholinergic neuronal input from the host, similar to the adrenergic neuronal input into the implants, observed in previous studies. In addition, the study was also aimed at examining the effect of this (cholinergic) neuronal input on thymic lymphopoiesis. 13/14-day-old fetal thymic rudiments were implanted into the anterior eye chambers of syngenic (BALB/c) mice.
