It is a deep heating procedure of limited range with low-level exposure to the subcutaneous fatty tissue; it may be used in subacute and chronic infectious inflammatory conditions, after surgical interventions, in affections of the salivary glands and of the maxillary sinuses, and also in temporo-mandibular joint disorders and facial neuralgias. Compared to the manual method of determining the diffusion height of the exudate prior and after periodontal therapy (the extent of exudate reduction being used as a criterion for the degree of regression of the inflammatory circulatory disorder), the photometric-planimetric techniques yield exacter and even more favourable results. Due to its easiness and rapidity, the measurement of the diffusion height of the exudate is, as an additional control examination, useful in assessing the success of periodontal treatment.
