Background And Objectives: Internal hernia (IH) after gastric bypass can be a life-threatening complication. Obstruction presents acutely or as chronic relapses, with symptoms of abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Early detection and exploration of IH as the cause of small bowel obstruction (SBO) is critical in this surgical emergency and can reduce morbidity and mortality.

Purpose: To evaluate a single-piece hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lens (IOL) with ultraviolet-ozone (UV-O3) treatment on the posterior surface and compare it with an identical untreated IOL in a rabbit model.

Background: Incorrect lens power remains one of the most common reasons for intraocular lens explantation/exchange. We evaluated stability and effect on capsular bag opacification of a new foldable modular lens system, with a base component and an optic component in rabbit eyes.
Methods: Bilateral phacoemulsification was performed on six rabbits; one eye received the test lens (Harmoni Modular Lens, ClarVista Medical), whereas the other received a single-piece hydrophobic acrylic control lens (SA60AT, Alcon).

Background: The literature suggests that a cemented long-stem femoral arthroplasty is associated with increased intraoperative and perioperative risks. Embolic events may precipitate cardiopulmonary complications and even death; by contrast, others have reported that the use of a cemented long-stem femoral arthroplasty in patients with metastatic bone disease is a safe procedure.
Questions/purposes: Specifically, in this study, we sought to identify (1) intraoperative complications potentially attributable to the use of cemented long-stem femoral components, and (2) early postoperative complications potentially attributable to the use of cemented long-stem femoral components in patients having an arthroplasty for metastatic bone disease.
Timing and energy resolutions of the bismuth germanate (Bi4Ge3O12) scintillation crystals were studied, with particular respect to a positron-camera application. In comparison with the NaI(Tl) system, the detection efficiency for annihilation radiation is more than triple, and coincidence detection efficiency is more than ten times as good. This paper explores the properties of the new scintillator material and their bearing on the spatial resolution and the efficiency of coincidence detection in positron cameras with stationary ring detectors.
