Background: Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is associated with an increased risk of premature death compared to those without T1D, yet perceptions of dying have not been well studied. The purpose of this secondary analysis of existing data was to explore the fears of adolescents with T1D and their parents related to the possibility of death due to T1D.
Method: A reflexive thematic analysis was used to examine data from interviews conducted with adolescents with T1D and their parents who participated in a primary grounded theory study of interdependence in T1D management.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is driving global change. An AI language model like ChatGPT could revolutionize the delivery of nursing education in the future. ChatGPT is an AI-enabled text generator that has garnered significant attention due to its ability to engage in conversations and answer questions.

This study aimed to develop principles to improve the composition of information about potential trial intervention benefits and harms within PILs so that variability and avoidable harms are reduced.
Methods: We conducted a two-round modified online Delphi survey, followed by a consensus meeting.
Purpose: Diabetes self-management for adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a complex and multifaceted process that requires careful consideration of a supportive or shared approach to care. The purpose of this review was to synthesize the qualitative and quantitative evidence regarding the nature of adolescent-parent interactions and relationships in the context of T1D management. Of particular interest was the role of interdependence in this relationship.

The purpose of this study was to explore the nature of interdependence with T1D management with adolescents and their parents.
Methods: Using a constructivist grounded theory methodology, 32 open-ended interviews were conducted, transcribed, and analyzed from 11 adolescents aged 10-18 years with T1D and eight parents.
Aims: This is a qualitative study exploring how consultant histopathologists determine diagnostic competence in their trainees.
Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with consultants and trainees and analysed using the Framework Method.
Results: Five major themes emerged from the data: process, person, stage of training, trust and time.

Objectives: Odontogenic tumors (ODTs) are a heterogeneous group of lesions derived from elements of tooth-forming tissues. No detailed data on the incidence of odontogenic tumors in the United Kingdom have been published. The aim of this study was to retrospectively describe the range and incidence of odontogenic tumors from 1992 to 2016 in a single specialist unit and to compare this population with others.

This article covers how and to what depth oral and oropharyngeal cancer is taught to dental students and other preregistration dental care professionals and examines the threats in the current climate to that education. It also discusses the knowledge of oral and oropharyngeal cancer among general dental practitioners and argues that further continuing professional development regarding the changing aetiology and epidemiology of oral and oropharyngeal cancer is desirable.

Over 90% of such lesions are squamous cell carcinomas, but even these may be divided into different entities based on site, aetiology and prognosis. In particular, squamous carcinomas in the oral cavity (oral cancer) should be regarded as a different disease to carcinomas arising in the oropharynx.

Histopathology represents a very different training environment to the surgical specialities so it is important to know that the current WBAs are fit for purpose. A literature search revealed very little evidence regarding the perception of WBAs in histopathology.

In a number of conditions where pre-formed materials are clinically inappropriate an injectable bone forming hydrogel could be beneficial. The development of an injectable hydrogel to stimulate bone repair and regeneration would have broad clinical impact and economic benefit in a variety of orthopedic clinical applications.

Pemphigus is a chronic autoimmune condition that can affect multiple areas of the body. The two main subtypes of pemphigus are pemphigus vulgaris (PV) and pemphigus foliaceus (PF) which can rarely occur concurrently or even transition from one to the other. The process of transition may be explained by qualitative changes in desmoglein autoantibody profile.

Beginning in 2005, the oral pathology course in Sheffield was gradually modified by the introduction of virtual microscopy with a focus on creating a more integrated, clinically orientated and dynamic approach to student teaching and learning in histopathology. The purpose of this paper is to describe how virtual microscopy has been used to enhance dental students' learning of oral pathology, and its role in facilitating an integrated oral disease curriculum in Sheffield.

The immune system plays an important role recognizing tumour precursor cells. However, due to immuno-editing mechanisms cancer cells are able to escape immune system surveillance.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFTissue microarrays were first constructed in the 1980s but were used by only a limited number of researchers for a considerable period of time. In the last 10 years there has been a dramatic increase in the number of publications describing the successful use of tissue microarrays in studies aimed at discovering and validating biomarkers. This, along with the increased availability of both manual and automated microarray builders on the market, has encouraged even greater use of this novel and powerful tool.

Tumors metastasizing to the head and neck region are uncommon. Metastasis of urothelial carcinoma to the maxillofacial region is exceedingly rare and mostly involves the jaw. We present a case of urothelial carcinoma metastasizing to the tongue.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the presence of myofibroblasts, frequently associated with a more aggressive neoplastic behavior, in oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) of young patients and to compare with the distribution observed in older patients.
Study Design: Tumor samples from 29 patients younger than 40 years old affected by TSCC were retrieved and investigated for the presence of stromal myofibroblasts by immunohistochemical reactions against α smooth muscle actin, and the results obtained were compared to TSCC cases affecting older patients.
Results: No positive reaction could be found in the stromal areas devoid of neoplastic tissue, whereas myofibroblasts were present in 58.
Background: Chemokines regulate physiological and pathological leucocyte trafficking, and chemokine receptors play a role in tumorigenesis. Expression of interleukin-8 (IL-8) receptors CXCR1 and CXCR2 has been shown in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) but remains poorly characterised. This aim of this study was to investigate CXCR1 and CXCR2 expression on normal oral keratinocytes (NOKs) and oral cancer cell lines (OCCL) and their relative response when exposed to IL-8 and growth-related oncogene-α (which selectively binds CXCR2).

It plays an important role in the mucosal immune system by retaining lymphocytes within the epithelium and is involved in graft rejection, immunity against tumours and the generation of gut-homing effector cells. In gut and breast, the ligand for αEβ7 is E-cadherin but in human oral mucosa and skin, there is evidence that lymphocytes use an alternative, unknown, ligand.

We investigated the role of the chemokine receptor XCR1 and its ligand lymphotactin (Lptn/XCL1) in the regulation of oral epithelial cell behaviour. In vitro XCR1 mRNA and cell surface protein expression was detected in normal oral keratinocytes and oral squamous cell carcinoma cell lines.

We report a case of systemic amyloidosis, with an unusual oral presentation, in a 70-year-old patient suffering from light chain myeloma. The patient presented with extensive ulceration of the tongue and alveolar ridges, and a large swelling in the floor of mouth. Incisional biopsies of the tongue and floor of mouth confirmed amyloid deposition within the tissues with evidence of necrotic ulceration.

A cross-sectional survey was sent to parents of school children ages 6 to 13 living in an agricultural community in rural Saskatchewan. History of asthma and respiratory symptoms (cough, phlegm, or wheeze), location of home, and exposure to farming activities including haying, harvesting, moving, or playing with hay bales, feeding livestock, cleaning or playing in barns, cleaning pens, and emptying or filling grain bins were assessed.

Bone graft procedures typically require surgeons to harvest bone from a second site on a given patient (Autograft) before repairing a bone defect. However, this results in increased surgical time, excessive blood loss and a significant increase in pain. In this context a synthetic bone graft with excellent histocompatibility, built in antibacterial efficacy and the ability to regenerate healthy tissue in place of diseased tissue would be a significant step forward relative to current state of the art philosophies.
