Myeloid cell leukemia 1 (MCL-1) is a member of the B-cell lymphoma 2 protein family and has anti-apoptotic functions. Deregulation of MCL-1 has been reported in several cancers, including lung and breast cancer. In the present study, the association of MCL-1 expression with molecular features in colorectal cancer (CRC) has been highlighted.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common global cause of chronic liver disease and remains under-recognized within healthcare systems. Therapeutic interventions are rapidly advancing for its inflammatory phenotype, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) at all stages of disease. Diagnosis codes alone fail to recognize and stratify at-risk patients accurately.

Bacterial Growth Temperature as a Horizontally Acquired Polygenic Trait.

Evolutionary events leading to organismal preference for a specific growth temperature, as well as genes whose products are needed for a proper function at that temperature, are poorly understood. Using 64 bacteria from phylum Thermotogota as a model system, we examined how optimal growth temperature changed throughout Thermotogota history. We inferred that Thermotogota's last common ancestor was a thermophile and that some Thermotogota evolved the mesophilic and hyperthermophilic lifestyles secondarily.

Characterization of Somatostatin Receptor 2 Gene Expression and Immune Landscape in Sinonasal Malignancies.

Although few randomized control trials (RCTs) have captured long-term effectiveness of PFO closure, observational data has been abundant. This is the first systematic review of observational studies determining incidence of long-term adverse outcomes in adults who underwent transcatheter PFO closure, with comparisons to findings from RCTs.

Ovarian Cancer Canada's Patient Partners in Research (PPiR) is a national volunteer-based program that trains and connects individuals with lived ovarian cancer (OC) experience to diverse research opportunities, to maximize the clinical relevance and real-life impact of OC research in Canada. A steadily increasing demand for patient partners to be involved as research team members and decision-makers led us to co-develop with the PPiR team a series of "best practices" for researcher-patient partnerships. This framework formalizes our evolving approach to patient engagement and begins to address challenges that can arise in research settings focused on less commonly diagnosed yet significant and fatal diseases such as OC: (1) Start early.

Comparative Efficacy and Safety of Thrombectomy Versus Thrombolysis for Large Vessel Occlusion in Acute Ischemic Stroke: A Systemic Review.

Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is a common cause behind a significant number of people who develop disabilities or die worldwide. Most of the strokes that occur globally are attributed to AIS as a result of large vessel occlusions that typically occur in arteries like the internal carotid and middle cerebral arteries. Primary treatments for AIS are mechanical thrombectomy (MT) and intravenous thrombolysis (IVT), and the clinical scenario can dictate what method would provide the most optimal outcome for the patient.

On-Site Portable Lithium Detection in Mining and Recycling Industries Based on a DNAzyme Fluorescent Sensor.

The global demand for lithium has soared in recent years due to the wide use of lithium batteries. To meet this demand, we herein report developing novel on-site sample preparation methods for the extraction of Li from relevant materials, including brine water, spodumene rock, as well as lithium-ion battery electrodes, and a DNAzyme-based fluorescent sensor for sensitive and robust detection of Li in these samples down to 1.4 mM (10 ppm) using a portable fluorometer.

Chronic inflammation contributes to the immunosuppressive prostate tumor microenvironment (TME) and is associated with poor response to ICIs. The primary source of inflammatory cytokine production is the inflammasome.

Mental health and capacity laws in Northern Ireland: examining the position of children and young people.

Mental health and capacity laws applicable to children and young people in Northern Ireland (NI) lack clarity and coherence, with significant gaps in service provision and safeguarding. Drawing on an examination of such laws, we argue that law reform is needed. In the short term, we suggest there is merit in publishing statutory guidance, such as a Code of Practice, to address both the issue of evolving capacity in children and to facilitate best practice in policy and practice.

Measuring maximum heart rate to study cardiac thermal performance and heat tolerance in fishes.

The thermal sensitivity of heart rate (fH) in fishes has fascinated comparative physiologists for well over a century. We now know that elevating fH is the primary mechanism through which fishes increase convective oxygen delivery during warming to meet the concomitant rise in tissue oxygen consumption. Thus, limits on fH can constrain whole-animal aerobic metabolism.

Epidemiology of Mental Health Challenges in Children and Adolescents.

In this narrative review, we will discuss current understandings and evidence on child and adolescent mental health including epidemiologic research methods, prevalence rates of mental health difficulties before the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, changes in mental health challenges after the pandemic onset, and clinical implications.

Background: Gene copy number gain (CNG) is a continuous variable. The relevant cutpoint for HER2, KRAS and MET CNG in non-mall cell lung cancer remains uncertain. As de novo driver oncogenes are largely mutually exclusive, oncogene overlap analysis can be used to explore CNG thresholds.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on individuals with pre-existing diabetes mellitus.

Objectives: To examine the psychosocial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on patients with a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus (DM).

Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 31 individuals with DM attending a diabetes clinic to determine the impact of the COVID-19 restrictions on anxiety and depressive symptoms, social and occupational functioning and quality of life. Anxiety symptoms were correlated with functioning, quality of life and diabetes self-management.

Building a learning health care community in rural and remote areas: a systematic review.

Background: A Learning Health Care Community (LHCC) is a framework to enhance health care through mutual accountability between the health care system and the community. LHCC components include infrastructure for health-related data capture, care improvement targets, a supportive policy environment, and community engagement. The LHCC involves health care providers, researchers, decision-makers, and community members who work to identify health care needs and address them with evidence-based solutions.

Research Question: How do perinatal outcomes differ between programmed and modified natural frozen embryo transfer (FET) cycles?

Design: A retrospective cohort study of 839 patients was undertaken at a university-affiliated fertility practice undergoing single blastocyst FET cycles between 2014 and 2020. The primary outcome measures were the incidence of ischaemic placental disease, small for gestational age (SGA), intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), preterm delivery, birth weight, and mode of delivery.

Mesothelin expression correlates with elevated inhibitory immune activity in patients with colorectal cancer.

The expression of the protein Mesothelin (MSLN) is highly variable in several malignancies, including colorectal cancer (CRC), and high levels are associated with aggressive clinicopathological features and worse patient survival. Colorectal cancer is both a common and deadly cancer; being the third most common in incidence and second most common cause of cancer-related death. While systemic therapy remains the primary therapeutic option for most patients with stage IV (metastatic; m) CRC, their disease eventually becomes treatment refractory, and 85% succumb within 5 years.

Indirect aggression is commonly used in adulthood, but most researchers have focused on this behavior in romantic relationships or from an intrasexual competition perspective. Therefore, we aimed to understand the social characteristics and mental health correlates of indirect aggression by combining perspectives from developmental psychopathology and evolutionary psychology. We examined: (1) whether social characteristics (social comparison, hypercompetitiveness) contributed to indirect aggression (perpetration, victimization) and (2) whether there were indirect effects from indirect aggression (perpetration, victimization) to mental health difficulties through loneliness.
