A survey of dental schools revealed little standardization of student requirements for dental radiography in the United States. Preclinical laboratories for intraoral radiography were given by 46 schools (87 percent), but such laboratories for panoramic radiography were given by only 11 (21 percent). The majority of schools had requirements for clinical intraoral radiography based upon either clock hours or numbers of full mouth radiographic surveys.

Several methods of treating dentinogenesis imperfecta have been reported as successful, but long-term followup is necessary to determine the ultimate prognosis for each approach.

Dorsal glossal mucosa from healthy southern African vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus pygerythrus) invariably contained intra-cytoplasmic eosinophilic bodies in the prickle cells between and beneath the filiform papillae. Ultrastructurally, the bodies were relatively homogeneous, electron-dense structures of varying size and resembled structures previously described as keratohyaline in the hamster and the dog. No similar bodies were found in tongues from humans and Cape chacma baboons.

Unsuspected antral diseases, from innocuous mucosal cysts to insidious squamous carcinoma, may be detected during routine use of this procedure.

Variations were observed in the morphology of the posterior margins of the superior articular processes, vertebral artery canals being present in 8%. Posterior arch dehiscence was found in eight individuals, including seven cases in the midline.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFStandardized panoramic radiographs were used to determine and compare the prevalences of focal osteosclerosis (including condensing osteitis) and apical periodontal pathoses in a sequential presenting sample of 600 European and 600 Cape Coloured dental outpatients. Most cases of focal osteosclerosis were found in edentulous zones or associated with carious or inadequately restored teeth; however, some were subjacent to apparently sound teeth. Focal osteosclerosis of definite dental origin was just as common in participants aged 25 years and older as in younger individuals.

Sixteen cases of cervical cystic lymphangioma are reported; all but two were present at birth. Intra-oral extensions were detected in five and three of these caused macroglossia resulting in partial respiratory obstruction. Mal-development of the jaws and consequent dental malocclusion is a possible complication of the condition.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA retrospective study of the epidemiologic data of 4,417 subjects has been undertaken to study the possibility of a link existing between glossal central papillary atrophy (median rhomboid glossitis) and denture stomatitis. Neither the association between glossal central papillary atrophy and denture stomatitis nor the association between glossal central papillary atrophy and denture use was statistically significant. However, the correlation between wearing removable dental prostheses and finding candidal mycelia in smears from these tongue lesions was statistically highly significant.
