The purpose of this study was to investigate the cytotoxicity and oxidative stress responses of selected engineered carbon and titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanomaterials to rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) primary hepatocytes. The engineered nanomaterials tested were C(60) fullerenes, multiwall nanotubes (MWNT), single-wall nanotubes (SWNT) (functionalized and nonfunctionalized), and TiO2 of 5 and 200 nm in size. Characterization of these materials showed that they were typically present in solution as agglomerates.

In this study the uptake and effect of citrate (AgNP(CIT)) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (AgNP(PVP)) coated manufactured silver nanoparticles, as well as AgNO(3) (Ag(+)) were tested using primary gill cells of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Prior to use, the nanoparticles were characterized for size, surface charge and aggregation behavior.

Background: Both erbium (Er:YAG) and carbon dioxide (CO(2)) devices are commonly-used, efficient laser systems for aggressive skin resurfacing procedures. The devices each have different adjustable parameters (density, spot size, number of pulses, pattern, etc) and utilize variable energy capabilities to tailor individual treatments depending on the skin pathology and goals of treatment. PACAP occurs in two forms, 27 and 38 amino acid residues, with PACAP38 being the predominant form in human tissues. In the present study, we determined the concentrations of PACAP38 and PACAP27 in first-trimester and full-term human placentas using radioimmunoassay.

[CS circular staplers for rectal surgery--a multicenter prospective study].

While circular staplers are used worldwide - especially for rectal anastomoses - there are relatively few publications on the effectiveness of these instruments. Between May 2008 and March 2009 in a prospective multicenter surveillance study 136 patients were enrolled from nine surgical units in Hungary. Rectal anastomoses were performed mainly in the upper and middle third of the rectum.

Background: Self-rated health predicts outcome in chronic disease, but such information is scarce in COPD. We aimed to assess self-rated health as an outcome predictor in carefully characterized patients with this condition.

Methods: This was a prospective study in 127 clinically stable patients with COPD (64 +/- 8 years, 79% men, 82% Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease stage II or III).

Structured and unstructured continuous models for Wolbachia infections.

We introduce and investigate a series of models for an infection of a diplodiploid host species by the bacterial endosymbiont Wolbachia. The continuous models are characterized by partial vertical transmission, cytoplasmic incompatibility and fitness costs associated with the infection. A particular aspect of interest is competitions between mutually incompatible strains.

Early experience with Suboxone maintenance therapy in Hungary.

Background: Suboxone (Buprenorphine/naloxone) is a novel drug used in opiate substitution therapy. In Hungary, it was introduced in November 2007. Suboxone is a product for sublingual administration containing the partial mu-receptor agonist buprenorphine and antagonist naloxone in a 4:1 ratio.

Guidelines versus clinical practice in antimicrobial therapy for COPD.

Limited information is available about current practice patterns involving the use of antibiotics in the inpatient management of acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD). We sought to characterize current patterns of antibiotic use and to compare them to evidence-based guidelines. This study is a retrospective case series of patients at a regional tertiary care medical center.

Self-rated health in different social classes of Slovenian adult population: nationwide cross-sectional study.

Objectives: Self-rated health can be influenced by several characteristics of the social environment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between self-rated health and self-assessed social class in Slovenian adult population.

Methods: The study was based on the Countrywide Integrated Non-communicable Diseases Intervention Health Monitor database.

Demographic history, current status, and efficiency of the mating strategy were analyzed using the pedigree of Pannon White (PW) rabbits born between 1992 and 2007. Potential accumulation of detrimental effects and loss of genetic diversity were also considered. Calculations and estimates were done most often for rabbits born in 2007, whereas other reference populations (REFPOPXXXX) were specified explicitly.

Effects of silver and gold nanoparticles on rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) hepatocytes.

The use of nanomaterials is rapidly increasing, while little is known about their possible ecotoxicological effects. This work investigates the toxic effects of silver (Ag) and gold (Au) nanoparticles on rainbow trout hepatocytes. In addition to toxicity assessment the particles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA).

[Our experience with nephron-sparing surgery in the past nine years].

Unlabelled: Surgical therapy is the only curative therapeutic approach for the treatment of renal cell carcinoma. Nephron-sparing surgery for renal cell carcinoma, when performed by proper indication, provides recurrence-free and long-term survival rates similar to those observed after a radical surgical procedure.

Aim: In this retrospective study we present our experiences on open nephron-sparing surgery.

Background: Data on self-rated health (SRH) in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are very limited; we therefore initiated this study to investigate the distribution of SRH and association with established parameters of disease severity.

Patients And Methods: We included 135 clinically stable patients with COPD (64 +/- 8 years, 71% men, GOLD stage: II -59; III -55; IV -21) and 25 healthy control persons. SRH was evaluated using the 5-grade Likert scale (1-very poor to 5-very good).

Histological changes associated with single and multiple passes of the 1540-nm Er:Glass fractional laser were examined using in vivo human skin.

Methods And Materials: Panni of five abdominoplasty patients were treated intraoperatively with a Fractional Lux1540 erbium glass laser system at various laser parameters, with single and multiple passes.

In particular, maternal separation (MS) markedly affects various stress-sensitive brain centers. Therefore, MS is considered as a suitable experimental paradigm to study how early life events affect brain plasticity and, hence, cause psychopathologies like major depression.

Ac-RYYRIK-ol has been labeled with tritium yielding [(3)H]Ac-RYYRIK-ol with exceptionally high specific radioactivity of 94Ci/mmol. The radioprobe is chemically stable even at 24 degrees C in ethanol solution for at least 4 days.
