Introduction Adhesive small bowel obstruction (ASBO) is a common cause of admissions to general surgery services. Water-soluble contrast (WSC), such as Gastrografin® (GGF), can be utilised in the conservative management of patients with ASBO, with predictive and possible therapeutic value. We audited the non-operative management of ASBO in the general surgery department of East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, a district general hospital.

We present a case of MALS in a 50-year-old male with recurrent epigastric pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. Diagnostic imaging revealed celiac artery stenosis and gastroduodenal artery collateral dilatation.

With a demonstrated effectiveness in weight loss and with the advent of ambulatory surgery, bariatric surgery allows for a streamlined care pathway, ideally suited for postoperative surveillance using digital health applications. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to evaluate the effect of eHealth-delivered health services or support for adults undergoing bariatric surgery.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures worldwide. A previous abdominal operation is not considered a significant risk factor for conversion to open cholecystectomy. We describe the case of an 80-year-old woman with a surgical history of a giant uncomplicated incisional midline hernia presenting at our department with choledocholithiasis and acute cholangitis.

The Timed Up and Go test is an easy-to-administer tool measuring physical performance. In older adults undergoing oncologic surgery, an impaired TUG has been associated with higher rates of postoperative complications and increased short term mortality.

Methods: Patients who underwent esophagectomy for EC were divided into elderly (≥70 years) and nonelderly (<70 years) groups. The groups were compared regarding patient and tumor characteristics, postoperative morbimortality, and disease-free, overall and cancer-specific survival.
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused the relocation of huge financial resources to departments dedicated to infected patients, at the expense of those suffering from other pathologies.
Aim: To compare clinical features and outcomes in COVID-19 pneumonia and non-COVID-19 pneumonia patients.
Patients And Methods: 53 patients (35 males, mean age 61.
Background: Parastomal hernia (PH) is a frequent and well-known complication of stoma placement. Most PHs are asymptomatic and those who are not are usually well tolerated by patients. Thus, watchful waiting is a common practice.

Design: Prospective cohort study with long-term follow-up.
Setting: International and multicenter locations.
Background: Definitive radiochemotherapy (dRCT) in locally advanced esophageal cancer is associated with a high rate of loco-regional recurrence. In this condition, salvage esophagectomy may be considered as a therapeutic option. The aim of this analysis is to evaluate the feasibility and the morbi-mortality of this strategy.

The patient presented to the emergency department, with epigastric pain, severe dyspnoea and profound respiratory acidosis. She required intubation and ventilation followed by gastric decompression with nasogastric tube and the administration of intravenous antibiotics for a lower respiratory tract infection.

Recently, the development of endoscopy and interventional radiology has led to a change in the management of colonic diverticular bleeding.

Background: Surgery used to be the treatment of choice in cases of blunt hepatic injury, but this approach gradually changed over the last two decades as increasing non-operative management (NOM) of splenic injury led to its use for hepatic injury. The improvement in critical care monitoring and computed tomographic scanning, as well as the more frequent use of interventional radiology techniques, has helped to bring about this change to non-operative management. Liver trauma ranges from a small capsular tear, without parenchymal laceration, to massive parenchymal injury with major hepatic vein/retrohepatic vena cava lesions.

Methods: 328 patients ≥ 70 years undergoing surgery for solid tumors were prospectively recruited. Preoperatively, twelve screening tools were administered.
This is the synthesis of a study on admissions of migrants to hospitals in Sicily, from January 2011 to June 2014. Migrants arrived in Lampedusa were 49,000 in 2011; 4,000 in 2012; 15,000 in 2013; 6,000 in 2014; 378 patients requiring hospitalization were transported exclusively by the 118 Helicopter Emergency Medical Service in 6 Sicilian hospitals: 203 in 2011, 62 in 2012, 95 in 2013, 18 in 2014. The mean age was 25 years; more frequent areas of provenance were Horn of Africa, North Africa, Syria, and Nigeria.

Aim: A modification is described of the J-pouch to facilitate ileoanal anastomosis in the presence of an anal or anovaginal fistula.
Method: The bowel is divided at the level of the apex of the J-pouch, the distal limb is advanced to project beyond the proximal limb by 3-5 cm. The pouch is constructed by a side-to-side anastomosis to form the H-pouch with a distal ileal segment, which is passed through the anal canal to form an ileoanal anastomosis.
Objective: To determine the predictive value of the "Timed Up & Go" (TUG), a validated assessment tool, on a prospective cohort study and to compare these findings to the ASA classification, an instrument commonly used for quantifying patients' physical status and anesthetic risk.
Background: In the onco-geriatric surgical population it is important to identify patients at increased risk of adverse post-operative outcome to minimize the risk of over- and under-treatment and improve outcome in this population.
Methods: 280 patients ≥70 years undergoing elective surgery for solid tumors were prospectively recruited.
Aim: A meta-analysis was performed to compare the outcome of single incision laparoscopic right hemicolectomy with standard multiport laparoscopic right hemicolectomy.
Method: A systematic search of databases was carried out to extract comparative studies (randomized and non-randomized, prospective and retrospective). Data were analysed according to Cochrane Collaboration guidelines.
Introduction: The goal of non-operative management (NOM) for blunt splenic trauma (BST) is to preserve the spleen. The advantages of NOM for minor splenic trauma have been extensively reported, whereas its value for the more severe splenic injuries is still debated. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the available published evidence on NOM in patients with splenic trauma and to compare it with the operative management (OM) in terms of mortality, morbidity and duration of hospital stay.

After chemoradiotherapy (CRT), lymph nodes are difficult to detect. This study aims to evaluate the feasibility of lymph node mapping in the mesorectum after CRT to analyze the pattern of metastasis spread and to assess the reliability of blue dye injection in sentinel lymph node detection.
