Background: Previous studies have shown that membrane elevation results in predictable bone formation in the maxillary sinus provided that implants can be placed as tent poles. In situations with an extremely thin residual crest which impairs implant placement, it is possible that a space-making device can be used under the sinus membrane to promote bone formation prior to placement of implants.
Purpose: The present study was conducted to test the hypothesis that the use of a space-making device for elevation of the sinus membrane will result in predictable bone formation at the maxillary sinus floor to allow placement of dental implants.

Aim: To validate the use of TMA technology in the study of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumours (MPNSTs).
Methods: A TMA was constructed containing five independent core biopsy samples of 14 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded MPNSTs.
Background: Complex diseases such as coronary artery disease (CAD), hypertension and diabetes are usually caused by individual susceptibility to multiple genes, environmental factors, and the interaction between them. The paraoxonase 1 (PON1) enzyme has been implicated in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and CAD. Two common polymorphisms in the coding region of the PON1 gene, which lead to a glutamine (Q)/arginine (R) substitution at position 192 and a leucine (L)/methionine (M) substitution at position 55, influence PON1 activity.

Purpose: The present study aimed at comparing the potential of porous Ti sponge rods with synthetic hydroxyapatite (HA) for the healing of bone defects in a canine model.
Several metal oxides, as well as metal oxides supported on activated carbon, were assessed as ozonation catalysts for the removal of selected organic compounds. Two transition metals (Mn, Co) and one rare earth element (Ce) were chosen for the preparation of the two series of catalysts. These materials were used in the ozonation of two aromatic compounds (aniline and sulfanilic acid) and one textile azo dye (CI Acid Blue 113).

Methods: The molecular profile of 14 gene expression was analyzed through cDNA array in blood samples of patients with prostate cancer (PCa) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Results: Messenger RNA from patient's blood showed significant differences between PCa and BPH groups only for the NOS3 gene, with an occurrence chance for PCa5.
TP53 mutations are common in esophageal squamous cell carcinomas (SCC). To identify biological markers of possible relevance in esophageal SCC, we (i) searched for genes expressed in a p53-dependent manner in TE-1, an esophageal SCC cell line expressing the temperature-sensitive TP53 mutant V272M, and (ii) investigated the expression of one of those genes, the interferon-inducible Guanylate Binding Protein 2 (GBP-2), in esophageal SCC tissues. Purpose Of The Study: To report the largest Brazilian series of Warthin's tumor (WT).
Procedures: The medical files of 76 patients with WT treated in the Brazilian National Cancer Institute from 1996 to 2006 were reviewed.
Results: The male:female ratio was 2:1, with a predominance of white, old, and smoking patients.
Granular cell tumor (GCT) is an uncommon benign neoplasm of soft tissue that characteristically affects the oral cavity, with increased frequency in the tongue. In this paper, we report a multicentric GCT affecting a 41-year-old black woman, with nodules in perineum, groin, vulva, tongue and lip. Some of these lesions were surgically resected, but in a six-year follow-up, new primary lesions and recurrences were observed.

The Kemicond process for sludge conditioning consists of chemical treatment with sulphuric acid and hydrogen peroxide at a pH-value of approximately 4 followed by a dewatering unit. It is shown that chemical treatment can improve the dewaterability of ferruginous digested sludge. It is concluded that the Fenton process as well as the oxidation of organics and the formation of iron hydroxo complexes are important reaction mechanisms.

This paper reports a Class II, division 2 malocclusion case successfully treated at an early age and in a relatively short period of time using the Trainer for Kids (T4K), a prefabricated functional appliance. Skeletal changes observed in the before and after treatment cephalic radiographs were compared with the expected changes produced by the patient's natural growth. The functional appliance's effects resulting in the outcomes observed in this clinical case, as well as the importance of identifying the etiological factors when treating a malocclusion will be discussed.

Similarly to what had been previously observed for B16F10-Nex2 murine melanoma cells, PdC (palladacycle compounds) obtained from the reaction of dmpa (N,N-dimethyl-1-phenethylamine) with the dppe [1,2-ethanebis(diphenylphosphine)] were able to induce apoptosis in HTC (hepatoma, tissue culture) cells, presenting anticancer activity in vitro. To elucidate cell site-specific actions of dmpa:dppe that could respond to the induction of apoptosis in cancer cells in the present study, we investigated the effects of PdC on isolated RLM (rat liver mitochondria).

Immunohistochemistry was used to evaluate protein expression in 53 primary OSCCs treated by radical surgery with free margins at a single institution in 1999. Histologic specimens were graded and analyzed for perineural invasion, lymphocytic infiltrate, and pattern of invasion.

For this purpose, three different samples, mainly differing in the respective surface chemistries, were prepared and characterized. Moreover, this work involved three pH levels, corresponding to acid, neutral and alkaline solutions, and six dyes belonging to several classes.

Myoepithelial carcinoma is a rare and aggressive neoplasm of the salivary glands. One-third of the patients may develop regional distant metastases, and lungs and kidneys have been regarded as the most usual sites for implantation. There is, however, little information on the metastatic behavior of this malignancy.

Purpose: Bone maintenance after mandibular reconstruction with autogenous iliac crest may be disappointing due to extensive resorption in the long term. The potential of the guided-bone regeneration (GBR) technique to enhance the healing process in segmental defects lacks comprehensive scientific documentation. This study aimed to investigate the influence of polylactide membrane permeability on the fate of iliac bone graft (BG) used to treat mandibular segmental defects.

We report here that the alternatively spliced nuclear factors associated with double-stranded RNA, NFAR-1 (90 kDa) and -2 (110 kDa), are involved in retaining cellular transcripts in intranuclear foci and can regulate the export of mRNA to the cytoplasm. Furthermore, the NFAR proteins were found to remain associated with exported ribonucleoprotein complexes. Loss of NFAR function, which was embryonic-lethal, caused an increase in protein synthesis rates, an effect augmented by the presence of the mRNA export factors TAP, p15, or Rae1.

The information concerning the molecular events taking place in onlay bone grafts are still incipient. The objective of the present study is to correlate the effects of perforation of resident bone bed on (1) the timing of onlay autogenous graft revascularization; (2) the maintenance of volume/density of the graft (assessed through tomography); and (3) the occurrence of bone remodeling proteins (using immunohistochemistry technique) delivered in the graft. Thirty-six New Zealand White rabbits were subjected to iliac crest onlay bone grafting on both sides of the mandible.

Here, human retinal (naso/temporal), cortical (left/right) and superior/inferior patterns of asymmetry were explored with achromatic contrast sensitivity (CS) tasks, that probed distinct spatiotemporal frequency channels. Low spatial, high temporal frequency stimuli (illusory frequency-doubling (FD)) yielded superior and temporal field disadvantage.

Alterations in gene expression, secretion, and regulation of TGF-beta1 may lead to a favorable environment for tumor development by angiogenesis stimulation and immune system suppression. We evaluated the influence of the TGFB1 polymorphisms by ARMS-PCR, Leu10Pro, and Arg25Pro, on prostate cancer (PCa) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
