Pomegranate juice anthocyanidins induce cell death in human cancer cells by mobilizing intracellular copper ions and producing reactive oxygen species.

Anthocyanidins are the most abundant polyphenols in pomegranate juice. This class of molecules includes Delphinidin (Del), Cyanidin (Cya), and Pelargonidin (Pel). Using prostate, breast and pancreatic cancer cell lines PC3, MDA-MB-231, BxPC-3 and MiaPaCa-2, we show that anthocyanidins inhibit cell proliferation (measured by MTT assay) and induce apoptosis like cell death (measured by DNA/Histone ELISA).

Nevus lipomatosus cutaneous superficialis with focal lipocytic pagetoid epidermal spread and secondary calcinosis cutis: a case report.

A case of nevus lipomatosus cutaneous superficialis is presented, wherein the lesion occurred as a gluteal swelling in a 6-year-old boy. On histopathology examination, it consisted of typical superficial expanses of mature adipose tissue in the papillary dermis of the polypoidal lesion. It was accompanied by 2 unusual findings, which consisted of the focal presence of lipocytes at the epidermal–dermal junction in the pagetoid manner and the prominent deposition of calcium resulting in calcinosis cutis–like lesions.

Fine needle aspiration cytology diagnosis of tailgut cyst: a rare entity.

Background: Tailgut cyst is a rare tumor believed to originate from small portions of the embryonic tailgut, which normally disappear in early fetal development. It is often misdiagnosed due to the general unfamiliarity with this entity and also because of its clinical presentation similar to other more common diseases such as perianal fistulas and abscesses.

Case: The authors take this opportunity to report a case of tailgut cyst in a 21-year-old Saudi female.

Coexistent non-Hodgkins lymphoma and ductal carcinoma breast: diagnosis on fine needle aspiration cytology.

Synchronous occurrance of multiple neoplastic processes is not very common, and the relationship between breast cancer with lymphoproliferative diseases is unusual as well. Furthermore, breast involvement by non-Hodgkins lymphoma is a rare event and primary breast non-Hodgkins lymphoma is even rarer. The authors take this opportunity to report a case of primary B-cell non-Hodgkins lymphoma breast occurring in association with invasive ductal carcinoma in a 47-year-old female for its rare synchronous association.

Fine-needle aspiration diagnosis of GIST: a diagnostic dilemma.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are the most common mesenchymal neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract. The authors take this opportunity to report two cases of GISTs of large bowel diagnosed on cytology and confirmed by histopathology and immunohistochemistry.

The role of sediment cytology in ovarian neoplasm.

Objective: It was our aim to study the role of sediment cytology in a diagnostic evaluation of ovarian neoplasm.

Methods: The present study was conducted in the Department of Pathology, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, AMU, Aligarh, India, over a span of 22 months. Cytological smears were prepared by centrifuging the sediment of fluid from the bottom of a container in which surgical specimens were received.

Fine-needle aspiration cytology diagnosis of non-Hodgkins lymphoma in a resource-challenged environment.

To establish the role of fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) as a diagnostic tool for non-Hodgkins lymphoma in a resource challenged environment. This study was conducted on patients with lymphadenopathy, attending various clinics over a period of 18 months. FNAC of the enlarged lymph nodes was performed and biopsy, special stains and immunohistochemical staining was done in selected cases.

Sonographic assessment of cervical lymphadenopathy: role of high-resolution and color Doppler imaging.

Background: The objective of this article was to study the role of high frequency ultrasound and color Doppler imaging in the diagnostic evaluation of patients with cervical lymphadenopathy.

Methods: The present study was carried out over a period of 18 months and included 64 patients of different age groups presenting with cervical lymphadenopathy. Comprehensive sonographic examination of the neck for cervical lymph nodes was performed using the LOGIQ 500 ultrasound machine (GE Wipro Proseries).

Apoptotic effect of green tea polyphenol (EGCG) on cervical carcinoma cells.

The objective of this study was to probe the apoptotic effect of green tea polyphenol epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) on cervical carcinoma cells. This study was conducted in Departments of Pathology and Biochemistry, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, India over a span of one and half years from January 2005 to August 2006. Caspase-3 assay was performed on monocytes isolated from cervical carcinoma patients and cultured with EGCG; cytosmears and sections from cervical carcinoma tissue cultured with EGCG were prepared for the morphological evidence of apoptosis.

FNA diagnosis of teratoma lung: A case report.

A case of teratoma occurring in the lung of a 27-year-old female, diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration cytology and confirmed by histopathology, is being presented here. Occurrence of teratoma at this site is a rare entity. The authors take this opportunity to report such a rare case, and as to the best of our knowledge, not many cases have been reported in literature till date.

Intraoperative cytology--role in bone lesions.

In spite of becoming an integral part of surgical pathology, very few reports are available regarding the utility of intraoperative cytology (IOC) exclusively for bone lesions. This study was undertaken in a view to fill this lacuna. Sixty bone lesions were evaluated intraoperatively with the help of cytology smears prepared by touch, scrape, or crush technique.
