Low birthweight has been related to an increased risk of adult cardiovascular disease (CVD). Transgenerational studies have been used to investigate likely mechanisms underlying this inverse association. It has been difficult to assess the contribution of environmental versus genetic factors to the association, as these factors are closely connected in nuclear families.
