Background: Head and neck cancers include malignancies of the scalp and neck skin, nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, oral cavity, salivary glands, pharynx and larynx. The term ABO secretor refers to people who secrete blood group antigens in their body fluids such as saliva, sweat, tears, semen, and serum. Non-secretors refer to those who do not secrete their blood group antigens in their body fluids.

Aim: Monascin and ankaflavin, the major fractions of the fungal-derived monascus yellow pigments, were incorporated with the herbal drug, resveratrol (RSV) within the core of folate-conjugated casein micelles (FA-CAS MCs, F1) for active targeting. We report a case of meningovascular syphilis in a young adult woman presenting with left hemiparesis due to near occlusion of proximal cervical internal carotid with subacute middle cerebral artery territory infarction. Diagnosis was made on the basis of positive serum, and spinal fluid serology for syphilis, carotid Doppler, and magnetic resonance angiography, as well as improvement after intravenous penicillin therapy. In this case report, the imaging findings were described and related literature was reviewed.

Glyoxylyl-peptides are useful peptide derivatives in the context of hydrazone, oxime or thiazolidine ligations. We describe a method for the determination of glyoxylyl-peptide concentration based on the reaction of the alpha-oxo aldehyde group with an excess of O-benzylhydroxylamine. The amount of O-benzylhydroxylamine necessary to convert the alpha-oxo aldehyde group into the corresponding O-benzyloxime was determined by RP-HPLC analysis and corresponded to the quantity of glyoxylyl-peptide used in the experiment.

Discussions of "code status" on a family practice teaching ward: what barriers do family physicians face?

Background: Patients want physicians to ascertain their wishes related to resuscitation, yet such discussions of "code status" are often delayed in the hospital setting, which compromises patient autonomy. Few studies have examined family physicians' views on this topic. Our objectives were to explore the experiences of family physicians and family practice residents in establishing code status with their patients who had been admitted to hospital and to identify barriers to these discussions.
