Background: Planning of surgical procedures in patients suffering from oropharyngeal cancer requires appropriate imaging, particularly in consideration of the spatial relationship to the mandible. Resection of portions of the mandible (box, marginal, or segmental resection) is often necessary, while simultaneously avoiding overtreatment. Typically, a computed tomography (CT) scan is initially performed.

In this study, the effect of hydrothermal process, ultrasound and combined freezing-ultrasound process on the physical and structural characteristics of wheat starch (Triticum aestivum) was investigated. Two heat-moisture treatments for 2 h (HMT2) and 4 h (HMT4), high-intensity, high-frequency ultrasound under two treatment times (10 to 20 min) (UT10 and UT20) as pre-treatment and sonication after freezing as post-treatment (FUT) on wheat starch suspension was applied. The modifications of starch crystallinity, chemical bonds of starch treated, morphology, thermal, swelling, pasting, and physicochemical characteristics were evaluated.

Purpose: Head and neck cancer surgery often requires postoperative monitoring in an intensive care unit (ICU) or intermediate care unit (IMC). With a variety of different risk scores, it is incumbent upon the investigator to plan a risk-adapted allocation of resources. Tumor surgery in the head and neck region itself offers a wide range of procedures in terms of resection extent and reconstruction methods, which can be stratified only vaguely by a cross-disciplinary score.

Insulin resistance is an early complication of diet-induced obesity (DIO), potentially leading to hyperglycaemia and hyperinsulinaemia, accompanied by adaptive β cell hypertrophy and development of type 2 diabetes. Insulin not only signals via the insulin receptor (INSR), but also promotes β cell survival, growth and function via the insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF1R). We recently identified the insulin inhibitory receptor (inceptor) as the key mediator of IGF1R and INSR desensitization.

Normal cells depend on autophagy to maintain cellular homeostasis by recycling damaged organelles and misfolded proteins and degrading toxic agents. Similar to apoptosis, targeting autophagy has been under attention in cancer therapy. However, autophagy has both pro-survival and pro-death functions in tumors, and its targeting requires further elucidation.

The aim of this paper is to introduce an innovative workflow for staged reconstruction of the mandible, including the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), using a temporary, patient-specific spacer. In cases of partial mandibular resection including disarticulation, sometimes needed to treat inflammatory bone disease, the spacer is intended to retain symmetry of the hard tissues, to preserve the soft tissues, and to act as a bactericidal agent. When complete healing of the affected surrounding tissues has occurred, final reconstruction using a patient-matched total TMJ endoprosthesis, in combination with an autogenous free bone flap, can be performed as a second-stage procedure.

Resistance to insulin and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) in pancreatic β-cells causes overt diabetes in mice; thus, therapies that sensitize β-cells to insulin may protect patients with diabetes against β-cell failure. Here we identify an inhibitor of insulin receptor (INSR) and IGF1 receptor (IGF1R) signalling in mouse β-cells, which we name the insulin inhibitory receptor (inceptor; encoded by the gene Iir). Inceptor contains an extracellular cysteine-rich domain with similarities to INSR and IGF1R, and a mannose 6-phosphate receptor domain that is also found in the IGF2 receptor (IGF2R).

Collecting and transporting samples for RNA analysis can be challenging, especially in situations where financial resources are limited. In this study, a quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) for the analysis of HCV RNA was developed and adapted for use with dried blood spot (DBS) samples. A qPCR for HCV 5'NCR, an internal control and a calibration curve were developed, and the sensitivity, specificity and dynamic range of amplification were evaluated using a panel of viruses.

The importance of Hospital Infection Control Committees (HICC) increases every year due to the emergence of multiresistant bacterial strains, hospital outbreaks, and other factors that cause HI. This demonstrates the fragility of the quality of hospital and medical care. Having a well-organized HICC benefits hospitals by improving quality, lowering costs and, most important, reducing patient morbidity and mortality.

Purpose: To evaluate the differentiation of benign from malignant breast tumors with T2*-weighted perfusion magnetic resonance (MR) imaging (blood volume imaging) versus that with dynamic T1-weighted contrast agent-enhanced MR imaging.

Materials And Methods: Ten healthy adult volunteers and 18 adult patients with benign or malignant lesions underwent both conventional T1-weighted dynamic contrast-enhanced breast MR imaging and repetitive first-pass, single-section, dynamic T2*-weighted perfusion MR imaging. Images were obtained before, during, and after injection of 20 mL of gadopentetate dimeglumine; peak gadopentetate dimeglumine concentrations were calculated from the maximal signal intensity loss on T2*-weighted images.

CancerNet redistribution via WWW.

Proc AMIA Annu Fall Symp

January 1997

CancerNet from the National Cancer Institute contains nearly 500 ASCII-files, updated monthly, with up-to-date information about cancer and the "Golden Standard" in tumor therapy. Perl scripts are used to convert these files to HTML-documents. A complex algorithm, using regular expression matching and extensive exception handling, detects headlines, listings and other constructs of the original ASCII-text and converts them into their HTML-counterparts.
