Angiogenesis inhibition treatments are limited and are often too late for advanced gastric cancer (GC) patients, in whom its efficacy is reduced. New molecular biomarkers are needed to optimize therapy regimens. In regard to this framework, circulating miRNAs, with high sensitivity and specificity, could be useful biomarkers of GC.

Given the recognized major problem of microbial drug resistance for human health, new metal-based drugs have been currently explored for their antimicrobial properties, including gallium-based compounds as potential metallophores that could perturb Fe's interactions with proteins. Herein we have designed and synthesized two bis-kojate ligands (named L4 and L6) and studied their Ga(III) complexes for their physico-chemical and biological properties. In particular a detailed study of their complexation properties in aqueous solution, showed equilibrium models with formation of quite stable dinuclear 2:3 metal:ligand complexes, though with different stability.

We introduce a data-driven potential aimed at the investigation of pressure-dependent phase transitions in bulk germanium, including the estimate of kinetic barriers. This is achieved by suitably building a database including several configurations along minimum energy paths, as computed using the solid-state nudged elastic band method. After training the model based on density functional theory (DFT)-computed energies, forces, and stresses, we provide validation and rigorously test the potential on unexplored paths.

For instance, iron-chelation therapy, which is used to treat iron-overload disorders, involves removing excess iron from the blood through the use of particular molecules, like deferoxamine, that have the ability to chelate the metal. The creation of bioinspired and biodegradable chelating agents is a crucial objective that draws inspiration from natural products.

The present work analyzes the complex formation ability towards Pb and Cd of a series of kojic acid derivatives that join the chelating properties of the pyrone molecules and those of polyamines, with the aim of evaluating how the different effects of oxygen and nitrogen coordinating groups act on the stability of metal complexes. Experimental research is carried out using potentiometric and spectrophotometric techniques supported by H and C NMR spectroscopy and DFT calculations. Actually, a different coordination mechanism toward Pb and Cd was proved: in the case of Pb, coordination takes place exclusively via the oxygen atoms, while the contribute of the nitrogen atoms appears relevant in the case of Cd.

Large-scale release of isotopically light carbon is responsible for the carbon isotope excursion (CIE) of the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event during the Lower Jurassic. Proposed sources include methane hydrate dissociation, volcanogenic outgassing of carbon dioxide and/or thermogenic methane release from the Karoo-Ferrar magmatic province (southern Africa). Distinct small-scale shifts superimposed on the long-term CIE have been interpreted as rapid methane pulses linked to astronomically forced climate changes.

The increasing biomedical interest in high-stability oxidovanadium(IV) complexes with hydroxypyridinone ligands leads us to investigate the complex formation equilibria of VO ion with a tetradentate ligand, named KC21, which contains two 3-hydroxy-1,2-dimethylpyridin-4(1)-one (deferiprone) moieties, and with the simple bidentate ligand that constitutes the basic unit of KC21, for comparison, named L5. These equilibrium studies were conducted with joined potentiometric-spectrophotometric titrations, and the results were substantiated with EPR measurements at variable pH values. This multi-technique study gave evidence of the formation of an extremely stable 1:1 complex between KC21 and oxidovanadium(IV) at a physiological pH, which could find promising pharmacological applications.

Iron oxides/oxyhydroxides, namely maghemite, iron oxide-silica composite, akaganeite, and ferrihydrite, are studied for As and As removal from water in the pH range 2-8. All sorbents were characterized for their structural, morphological, textural, and surface charge properties. The same experimental conditions for the batch tests permitted a direct comparison among the sorbents, particularly between the oxyhydroxides, known to be among the most promising As-removers but hardly compared in the literature.

Aim: During radiotherapy, in patients with implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) malfunctions are considered more likely if doses more than 2 Gy reach the ICD site; however, most malfunctions occur with high-energy (>10 MV) radiations, and the risk is less defined using 6-MV linear accelerators. The purpose of the study is to experimentally evaluate the occurrence of malfunctions in ICDs radiated with a 6-MV linear accelerator at increasing photon doses.

This report describes the case of a boy with prolidase deficiency who presented with splenomegaly and leg ulcers. Laboratory examination revealed hypergammaglobulinaemia, hyperimmunoglobulinaemia E, increased erythrocyte sedimentation rate, elevated transaminases, positive antinuclear and anti-double-stranded DNA antibodies, and complement consumption. No haematological, renal or articular problems were detected; neutrophil count was normal.

We report on the long-term follow-up of the first Italian patient with the tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4)-responsive type of phenylalanine hydroxylase deficiency (R243X/Y414C genotype). The patient was diagnosed by the newborn screening for phenylketonuria (PKU) and with a positive BH4 loading test. Introduction of BH4 (initially 10 and later 20 mg/kg/day) in addition to reduced low-phenylalanine diet resulted in therapeutic plasma phenylalanine concentrations (<340 micromol/L).

We report on a child with a clinical and neuroradiological picture consistent with Leigh disease and an unusual association of isolated hypermethioninaemia and 3-methylglutaconic aciduria. A low-methionine diet normalized both plasma methionine and urine 3-methylglutaconic acid; a methionine-loading test led to significant increase of both metabolites. In the skin fibroblasts the activity of 3-methylglutaconyl-CoA hydratase was essentially normal.
