The plasma membrane of a biological cell is a complex assembly of lipids and membrane proteins, which tightly regulate transmembrane transport. When a cell is exposed to strong electric field, the membrane integrity becomes transiently disrupted by formation of transmembrane pores. This phenomenon termed electroporation is already utilized in many rapidly developing applications in medicine including gene therapy, cancer treatment, and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias.

Trans-cranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is the process that excitable human brain tissue is activated with the electric field induced from a changing magnetic field. Magnetic focusing characteristic is one of the most important technical considerations of coil design in TMS. In this paper, a half solenoid coil was proposed to be used in TMS and the magnitude profile of the induced electric fields in different depth was studied based on the induced electric field theory of magnetic stimulating coil.
