Article Synopsis
  • Cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) is important in plant breeding and has been used in various crop hybrids like pepper, but previous studies lacked functional validation of the fertility-restoring gene in this crop.
  • This study successfully identifies and characterizes a single dominant locus that restores CMS in the pepper inbred line Zhangshugang, which encodes a protein essential for fertility restoration.
  • The research also incorporated resequencing of 176 key pepper breeding parents and developed a breeding chip with over 51,000 genetic markers, contributing to the creation of a high-quality red pepper hybrid and enhancing strategies for molecular breeding in peppers.

A novel polymycovirus isolated from the plant-pathogenic fungus Colletotrichum gloeosporioides was identified. The viral genome is composed of nine double-stranded RNA segments, ranging in size from 699 bp to 2,444 bp. With the exception of dsRNA5, which contains two open reading frames (ORF5-1 and ORF5-2), the other dsRNA segments each contain one ORF.

is a pathogenic fungus causing leaf black spot and fruit rot disease in a wide variety of crops. Some mycoviruses that cause detrimental effects on fungal hosts could be useful in studying the pathogenesis of fungal hosts. In this study, we reported two mycoviruses, ourmia-like virus 1- ourmia-like virus 1 (CfOLV1-CgOLV1) and ourmia-like virus 2 (CfOLV2), from a fungus.
