Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the effectiveness of direct bilirubin (D-bil) levels and the direct-to-total bilirubin (D/T) ratio in detecting biliary atresia (BA) in high-risk infants, emphasizing the importance of early detection for better treatment outcomes.
  • - Conducted in a Taiwanese tertiary medical center, the research analyzed data from 4,468 infants, revealing that a D-bil level of ≥1.0 mg/dL has a sensitivity of 100% and higher specificity (77.3%) for BA in infants aged 3 to 60 days compared to the D/T ratio.
  • - For newborns under 3 days, the study found that D-bil ≥0.5 mg/dL

Background/purpose: Biliary complications remain a major morbidity after liver transplantation in children. Inadequate arterial supply to the bile duct after transplantation plays an important role in developing anastomotic biliary complications. We aimed to elucidate the relationship between the resistance index (RI) of hepatic artery and the anastomotic biliary complications after liver transplantation in children.
