Obesity is a growing global health epidemic with limited orally administered therapeutics. Serotonin (5-HT) is one neurotransmitter which remains an excellent target for new weight-loss therapies, but a gap remains in understanding the mechanisms involved in 5-HT produced in the dorsal Raphe nucleus (DRN) and its involvement in meal initiation. Using an optogenetic feeding paradigm, we showed that the 5-HT➔arcuate nucleus (ARH) circuit plays a role in meal initiation.

Article Synopsis
  • Cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) are frequently observed in patients undergoing extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), with findings linked to clinical factors.
  • A study involving 138 ECMO patients showed that those with CMBs had significant abnormalities in blood coagulation profiles and lower Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) scores, suggesting worse neurological outcomes.
  • The research indicates a correlation between CMB burden and coagulation parameters, emphasizing the need for careful monitoring and management of these factors in ECMO patients.

The major female ovarian hormone, 17β-estradiol (E), can alter neuronal excitability within milliseconds to regulate a variety of physiological processes. Estrogen receptor-α (ERα), classically known as a nuclear receptor, exists as a membrane-bound receptor to mediate this rapid action of E, but the ionic mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we show that a membrane channel protein, chloride intracellular channel protein-1 (Clic1), can physically interact with ERα with a preference to the membrane-bound ERα.

Alzheimer's Disease and Alzheimer's Disease-related dementias (AD/ADRD) pose major global healthcare challenges, with diabetes mellitus (DM) being a key risk factor. Both AD and DM-related ADRD are characterized by reduced cerebral blood flow, although the exact mechanisms remain unclear. We previously identified compromised cerebral hemodynamics as early signs in TgF344-AD and type 2 DM-ADRD (T2DN) rat models.

Background: Sepsis is a life-threatening severe inflammatory reaction caused by the host's dysregulated response to infection. Sepsis-induced myocardial dysfunction (SIMD) has been confirmed to occur in 50 % of patients with septic shock. Currently, the pathophysiological mechanism of SIMD is complex, and there is no targeted treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent advancements in photonic terahertz (THz) systems highlight their potential in integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) applications.
  • This study introduces an adaptive frequency offset compensation method using fractional Fourier transform (FrFT) for dual-chirp ISAC waveforms, which allows for frequency synchronization without the need for preamble training and performs well against noise.
  • Experimental validation shows successful frequency offset compensation in a 300 GHz THz-ISAC system, with high data transmission rates and minimal estimation errors.

Feeding behaviour is influenced by two primary factors: homoeostatic needs driven by hunger and hedonic desires for pleasure even in the absence of hunger. While efficient homoeostatic feeding is vital for survival, excessive hedonic feeding can lead to adverse consequences such as obesity and metabolic dysregulations. However, the neurobiological mechanisms that orchestrate homoeostatic versus hedonic food consumption remain largely unknown.

Visual object tracking is an important technology in camera-based sensor networks, which has a wide range of practicability in auto-drive systems. A transformer is a deep learning model that adopts the mechanism of self-attention, and it differentially weights the significance of each part of the input data. It has been widely applied in the field of visual tracking.

Hypothalamic neural circuits regulate instinctive behaviors such as food seeking, the fight/flight response, socialization, and maternal care. Here, we identified microdeletions on chromosome Xq23 disrupting the brain-expressed transient receptor potential (TRP) channel 5 (TRPC5). This family of channels detects sensory stimuli and converts them into electrical signals interpretable by the brain.

Background: Thinning of retinal thickness seen on optical coherence tomography (OCT) is frequent in patients with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD). We explored the association between OCT metrics, MRI measurements and clinical outcomes in NMOSD.

Methods: 44 NMOSD and 60 controls underwent OCT and MR imaging.

Currently, new clean energy storage technology must be effective, affordable, and ecologically friendly so as to meet the diverse and sustainable needs of the energy supply. In this work, NiCo-LDH containing intercalated EG was successfully prepared within 210 s using an ultrafast microwave radiation technique. Subsequently, a series of characterization and systematic electrochemical tests were conducted to analyze the composition, structure, and energy storage mechanism of the NiCo-LDH material.

Flexible capacitive sensors are widely deployed in wearable smart electronics. Substantial studies have been devoted to constructing characteristic material architectures to improve their electromechanical sensing performance by facilitating the change of the electrode layer spacing. However, the air gaps introduced by the designed material architectures are easily squeezed when subjected to high-pressure loads, resulting in a limited increase in sensitivity over a wide range.

Opioid pain medications, such as morphine, remain the mainstay for treating severe and chronic pain. Prolonged morphine use, however, triggers analgesic tolerance and hyperalgesia (OIH), which can last for a long period after morphine withdrawal. How morphine induces these detrimental side effects remains unclear.

  • The study aimed to compare the clinical outcomes of two internal fixation methods, InterTAN and PFNA, for treating intertrochanteric fractures in elderly patients.
  • The analysis involved 151 patients, showing that while PFNA had shorter operation times and less bleeding, it resulted in longer fracture healing times compared to InterTAN.
  • Ultimately, InterTAN provided better postoperative recovery, but PFNA caused less surgical trauma, highlighting the need to choose the fixation method based on individual patient circumstances.

Colorectal cancer is a common malignant digestive tract tumour with high morbidity and mortality. Early detection, treatment and diagnosis are crucial for preventing and treating colorectal cancer, which develops through multi-stage accumulation and gene participation, affecting tumour marker levels. Chronic wounds can lead to the development of certain cancers, such as colorectal cancer.

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and Alzheimer's Disease-Related Dementia (ADRD) are the primary causes of dementia that has a devastating effect on the quality of life and is a tremendous economic burden on the healthcare system. The accumulation of extracellular beta-amyloid (Aβ) plaques and intracellular hyperphosphorylated tau-containing neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) in the brain are the hallmarks of AD. They are also thought to be the underlying cause of inflammation, neurodegeneration, brain atrophy, and cognitive impairments that accompany AD.

Vascular aging influences hemodynamics, elevating risks for vascular diseases and dementia. We recently demonstrated that knockout (KO) of Dusp5 enhances cerebral and renal hemodynamics and cognitive function. This improvement correlates with elevated pPKC and pERK1/2 levels in the brain and kidneys.
