Electrocatalytic water splitting is one of the most commercially valuable pathways of hydrogen production especially combined with renewable electricity; however, efficient and durable electrocatalysts are urgently needed to reduce electric energy consumption. Here, we reported a Ru and Fe co-doped Mo C on nitrogen doped carbon via a controllable two-step method, which can be used for efficient and enduring hydrogen evolution reaction. At 10, 100 and 200 mA cm in acidic electrolyte, the resultant Ru-Fe/Mo C@NC delivered low overpotentials of 31, 78 and 103 mV, respectively, which are comparable to that of the commercial Pt/C (20 wt %).

The tumorigenesis of breast cancer is a complex process involving multiple factors, among which abnormal gene expression is a key event. Nevertheless, studies on the regulation of gene expression have focused primarily on the transcriptional level, although the abnormal translation regulation is also closely related to tumorigenesis. Accumulating evidence has indicated the dysregulation of eukaryotic initiation factor (eIF) subunits in a variety of tumors, which contributes to the malignant transformation, tumor growth, metastasis, and the prognosis of patients.

Bamboo forests have an efficient carbon sequestration capacity and play an important role in responding to global climate change. However, the current estimation of bamboo carbon storage has some errors, leading to uncertainty in the spatiotemporal pattern of bamboo forest carbon storage. This study simulated aboveground carbon storage of Zhejiang Province, China, during 1984-2014 based on the combination of an improved BIOME-BGC (biogeochemical cycles) model and remote sensing data, with the accuracy being verified with forest resource inventory data.

Lung injury is a hydrogen sulfide (HS)-associated complication with high mortality in acute pancreatitis (AP) cases. Herein, we used Prussian Blue (PB) as a HS-responsive acceptor to develop a novel pure-inorganic upconversion nanoprobe for detecting and eliminating HS, which can be used for diagnosing AP and alleviating lung injury. Upconversion nanoprobes with 5 nm PB shells were optimized to achieve outstanding HS detection capacity (linear range: 0-150 μM, LOD: 50 nM), which met the serum HS range, and thus were feasible for imaging HS .

At contaminated sites, indoor inhalation of volatile organic compounds from groundwater contamination, known as vapor intrusion (VI), is an important exposure pathway to determine groundwater cleanup level. Based on empirical analysis, US EPA concluded that there is a low probability for vapors from fuel hydrocarbons dissolved in groundwater to induce indoor concentrations that exceed risk-based standards, and recommended 6 feet vertical building-source separation distance as the risk screening tool for such cases. In this study, we examine this recommendation by performing numerical modeling to investigate the detailed effects of the capillary fringe on petroleum vapor biodegradation and attenuation.

In this work we investigate the role of soil texture in petroleum vapor intrusion (PVI) by performing numerical modeling, analytical calculations, and statistical analysis of the USEPA's PVI database. Numerical simulations were conducted for three kinds of soil (sand, sandy loam, and clay), and the results indicate that the maximum attenuations of vapor concentrations from source to indoor air were observed when the clay soil is below the building. In the anaerobic zone, the normalized soil gas concentration profiles were observed to be similar and independent of soil type, whereas in the aerobic zone, a more significant attenuation was observed in finer grained soils.

In this study we investigate the role of the sub-foundation soil texture in determining groundwater source-to-indoor air attenuation factors. A three-dimensional numerical model was used to simulate a series of two-layer scenarios, involving different sub-foundation and deep soil textures, foundation types and groundwater source depths. The results indicate that if the sub-foundation soil permeability is larger than 10 m, the convection dominates the soil gas transport into the building, and the indoor air concentration increases by half an order of magnitude with one order of magnitude increase of the sub-foundation soil permeability.

Based on the MODIS surface reflectance data, five vegetation indices, including norma-lized difference vegetation index (NDVI), simple ratio index (SR), Gitelson green index (GI), enhanced vegetation index (EVI) and soil adjusted vegetation index (SAVI) were constructed as remote sensing variables, coupled with the seven original spectral reflectance bands of MODIS. Stepwise regression and correlation analysis were used to select the variables, and the stepwise regression and Back Propagation (BP) neural network models were constructed based on the measured LAI to retrieve the LAI time series data of Phyllostachys praecox (Lei bamboo) forest during the period from January 2014 to March 2017. The retrieval results were compared with MOD15A2 LAI products during the same period.

Preferential pathways can be significant vapor intrusion (VI) contributors, causing potentially higher inhalation risk to residents of affected buildings than that arising through traditional intrusion pathways. To assess land drains as a preferential pathway, a three-dimensional model, validated using data from a 4-yr field study, was used to study the roles of subfoundation soil permeability on soil gas flow and indoor depressurization. Results indicated that it is almost impossible for an indirect preferential pathway like a land drain ending in subfoundation soils with a permeability <10 m to affect indoor air quality if the land drain connects to a source with the same vapor concentration as that of the groundwater source beneath the building.
