The limits of applicability of scaling relations to generate new simulations of photon migration in scattering media by re-scaling an existing Monte Carlo simulation are investigated both for the continuous wave and the time domain case. We analyzed the convergence properties in various scenarios by numerical methods, trying to derive practical guidelines for the judicious use of this approach, as well as a deeper understanding of the physics behind such relations. In the case of scaling of the absorption coefficient, the convergence is always rigorous both for the forward and inverse problems, relying on the derivatives with respect to the absorption coefficient.

Publication selection bias undermines the systematic accumulation of evidence. To assess the extent of this problem, we survey over 68,000 meta-analyses containing over 700,000 effect size estimates from medicine (67,386/597,699), environmental sciences (199/12,707), psychology (605/23,563), and economics (327/91,421). Our results indicate that meta-analyses in economics are the most severely contaminated by publication selection bias, closely followed by meta-analyses in environmental sciences and psychology, whereas meta-analyses in medicine are contaminated the least.

Monte Carlo (MC) is a powerful tool to study photon migration in scattering media, yet quite time-consuming to solve inverse problems. To speed up MC-simulations, scaling relations can be applied to an existing initial MC-simulation to generate a new data-set with different optical properties. We named this approach trajectory-based since it uses the knowledge of the detected photon trajectories of the initial MC-simulation, in opposition to the slower photon-based approach, where a novel MC-simulation is rerun with new optical properties.

The hERG1 potassium channel is aberrantly over expressed in tumors and regulates the cancer cell response to integrin-dependent adhesion. We unravel a novel signaling pathway by which integrin engagement by the ECM protein fibronectin promotes hERG1 translocation to the plasma membrane and its association with β1 integrins, by activating girdin-dependent Gαi3 proteins and protein kinase B (Akt). By sequestering hERG1, β1 integrins make it avoid Rab5-mediated endocytosis, where unbound channels are degraded.

Biological patterns that emerge during the morphogenesis of multicellular organisms can display high precision at large scales, while at cellular scales, cells exhibit large fluctuations stemming from cell-cell differences in molecular copy numbers also called demographic noise. We study the conflicting interplay between high precision and demographic noise in trichome patterns on the epidermis of wild-type leaves, as a two-dimensional model system. We carry out a statistical characterization of these patterns and show that their power spectra display fat tails-a signature compatible with noise-driven stochastic Turing patterns-which are absent in power spectra of patterns driven by deterministic instabilities.

Tigilanol tiglate is a natural product diterpenoid in clinical trials for the treatment of a broad range of cancers. Its unprecedented protein kinase C isoform selectivity make it and its analogues exceptional leads for PKC-related clinical indications, which include human immunodeficiency virus and AIDS eradication, antigen-enhanced cancer immunotherapy, Alzheimer's disease and multiple sclerosis. Currently, the only source of tigilanol tiglate is a rain forest tree, Fontainea picrosperma, whose limited number and restricted distribution (northeastern Australia) has prompted consideration of designed tree plantations to address supply needs.

Training of neural networks can be reformulated in spectral space, by allowing eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the network to act as target of the optimization instead of the individual weights. Working in this setting, we show that the eigenvalues can be used to rank the nodes' importance within the ensemble. Indeed, we will prove that sorting the nodes based on their associated eigenvalues, enables effective pre- and post-processing pruning strategies to yield massively compacted networks (in terms of the number of composing neurons) with virtually unchanged performance.

Kisspeptins (KPs) are the most potent stimulating neurotransmitters of GnRH release, and consequently KP administration triggers LH and/or FSH release. In small ruminants, KP or its analogs induced an LH surge followed by ovulation in both cyclic and acyclic animals, while in the mare KP only increased LH plasma levels but failed to induce ovulation.
