Many studies have implicated operative length as a predictor of post-operative complications, including venous thromboembolism [deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE)]. We analyzed the American College of Surgeons (ACS) National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) database from 2006 to 2014, to evaluate whether length of operation had a statistically significant effect on post-operative complications in patients undergoing surgical resection of meningioma. Patients were included for this study if they had a post-operative diagnosis of meningioma.

Management of the anterior maxilla is a challenge in compromised clinical situations such as loss of teeth or soft tissues, alveolar ridge defects, or loss of all three. This report shows the systematic sequence of surgical and prosthetic management in a case of Seibert Class III alveolar atrophy where the patient refused a removable prosthesis. This was resolved with a hybrid metal/porcelain prosthesis with 17-degree multiunit abutments, leading to totally satisfactory esthetic and functional results.

Eating avoidance disorder and Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome following gastric bypass: an under-diagnosed association.

Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome (WKS) and disordered eating behavior have been reported separately after bariatric surgery. We report a patient who following a bariatric operation developed WKS associated with a disturbed eating behavior without vomiting. This morbidly obese man developed an intense fear of gaining weight in the postoperative period and engaged in an extreme form of "food avoidance behavior".

Substantial narrowing of the Niemann-Pick C candidate interval by yeast artificial chromosome complementation.

Niemann-Pick disease type C (NP-C) is an autosomal recessive lipidosis linked to chromosome 18q11-12, characterized by lysosomal accumulation of unesterified cholesterol and delayed induction of cholesterol-mediated homeostatic responses. This cellular phenotype is identifiable cytologically by filipin staining and biochemically by measurement of low-density lipoprotein-derived cholesterol esterification. The mutant Chinese hamster ovary cell line (CT60), which displays the NP-C cellular phenotype, was used as the recipient for a complementation assay after somatic cell fusions with normal and NP-C murine cells suggested that this Chinese hamster ovary cell line carries an alteration(s) in the hamster homolog(s) of NP-C.

Fentiazac in postsurgical dental pain.

The analgesic effects of a 200-mg oral dose of fentiazac were examined in 49 patients, ranging from 11 to 52 years of age, who had undergone painful dental surgery. Patients' subjective observations of the drug's analgesic effects were obtained by means of a questionnaire in which the intensity of pain and the alleviation of pain were evaluated at various intervals from zero to eight hours after administration of the drug. The study confirmed the drug's tolerability and effectiveness in alleviating pain.
