This paper demonstrates a Verilog-A compact photonic model based on coupled-mode theory for nonlinear interactions, including four-wave mixing (FWM) and cross-phase modulation (XPM), to present a general framework and methodology for modeling nonlinear interactions in electronic-photonic co-simulation. The model is compatible with existing electronic design automation (EDA) platforms and can support rapid electronic-photonic co-simulation. It avoids describing the complicated physical process of the FWM and provides an easy way for system designers to monitor the dynamics of the critical optical parameters, thus accelerating the co-design and co-optimization of the electronic-photonic hybrid systems incorporating FWM.

Optical patterning of colloidal particles is a scalable and cost-effective approach for creating multiscale functional structures. Existing methods often use high-intensity light sources and customized optical setups, making them less feasible for large-scale microfabrication processes. Here, we report an optical patterning method for semiconductor nanoparticles by light-triggered modulation of their surface charge.

Background: Pancreatic cancer is a highly malignant tumor, which is still a major global health problem. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are regularly used in adjuvant therapy for pancreatic cancer but their therapeutic efficacy is limited.

Methods: In the present study, nanoparticle(MSN-AuNPs) was used as a drug carrier loaded with tirapazamine(TPZ) and hyaluronic acid (HA) to synthesize a multifunctional nanoplatform HA@TPZ-MSN-AuNPs (HTMA) for hypoxia activation and radiotherapy sensitization, which can be combined with radiotherapy therapy and synergistically enhance the therapeutic effect in pancreatic cancer.

It remains unclear whether elevated ventricular wall pressure and left ventricular enlargement in patients with left ventricular systolic dysfunction (LVSD) can lead to left bundle branch block (LBBB). In this study, 801 consecutive hospitalized patients with a left ventricular ejection fraction of < 50% were enrolled. The primary outcome was the occurrence of new-onset LBBB or heart failure-related hospitalization, all-cause mortality, ventricular tachycardia, or implantation of an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) /cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT).

Background And Hypothesis: The complex immune-brain interactions and the regulatory role of mitochondria in the immune response suggest that mitochondrial damage reported in schizophrenia (SZ) may be related to abnormalities observed in immune and brain functions.

Study Design: Mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNA CN), a biomarker of mitochondrial function, was assessed in peripheral blood leukocytes (PBLs) of 121 healthy individuals and 118 SZ patients before and after 8 weeks of antipsychotic treatment, and a meta-analysis related to blood mtDNA CN was conducted. Plasma C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in SZ patients were obtained from the medical record system.

Background: Biocompatible nanocarriers are widely employed as drug-delivery vehicles for treatment. Nevertheless, indiscriminate drug release, insufficient organ-specific targeting, and systemic toxicity hamper nanocarrier effectiveness. Stimuli-responsive nano-sized drug delivery systems (DDS) are an important strategy for enhancing drug delivery efficiency and reducing unexpected drug release.

Trabecular meshwork (TM) tissue has a crucial role in regulating aqueous humor circulation in the eye, thus maintaining normal intraocular pressure (IOP). TM dysfunction causes IOP elevation, which leads to glaucoma. To investigate biological changes in TM tissue in patients with glaucoma, we analyzed the mRNA expression microarray dataset, GSE27276.

Unlabelled: The dynamic succession and seasonal characteristics of microbiota throughout the Shanxi mature vinegar (SMV) fermentation by the semisolid-solid process were explored using high-throughput sequencing techniques. The results showed that the richness and diversity of fungi were higher than those of bacteria in a complete seasonal SMV fermentation cycle, and the microbial community was dominated by 11 taxa of bacteria and 16 taxa of fungi. In all four seasons, lactic acid bacteria and acetic acid bacteria were the dominant bacteria, while the dominant fungi varied.

Article Synopsis
  • The research investigates how iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (MNP Fe3O4) combined with gambogic acid (GA-MNP Fe3O4) affect colorectal cancer (CRC), showing an enhanced antitumor effect against CRC cells.
  • GA targets a protein called RORB, which when activated by GA, helps to inhibit CRC metastasis, while knocking down RORB reduces the efficacy of GA-MNP Fe3O4 in combating cancer spread.
  • RORB also promotes the expression of another protein, EMILIN1, and increasing EMILIN1 levels can counteract the negative effects of RORB knockdown, further aiding in the reduction of CRC metastasis.

Background: The combination of methimazole and propranolol is considered an effective treatment regimen for hyperthyroidism in clinical practice; however, detrimental effects on the heart rate, bone metabolism and thyroid hormone levels have been reported. Therefore, the present study aimed to systematically review the efficacy and safety differences in patients with hyperthyroidism and the effects of treatment on heart rate, bone metabolism, cortisol, and adrenocorticotropic hormone levels using case-control studies.

Methods: Clinical case-control trials of methimazole combined with propranolol for the treatment of hyperthyroidism were selected from Chinese and English databases, and data were collected from the establishment of the database until August 2024.

Background: Supplementary motor area (SMA) syndrome commonly occurs after glioma resection and requires weeks to months of recovery.

Methods: Thirty-four glioma patients with SMA syndrome were reviewed and assigned to recovered and non-recovered groups based on whether their motor function recovered on postoperative day 7. To validate the association between variations in nodal properties and recovery time, neuro-navigated repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (nrTMS) was applied to stimulate potential nodes.

Using QTL mapping and GWAS, two candidate genes (Zm00001d051039 and Zm00001d051147) were consistently identified across the three different environments and BLUP values. GWAS analysis identified the candidate gene, Zm00001d044845. These genes were subsequently validated to exhibit a significant association with maize gray leaf spot (GLS) resistance.

The escalating energy and environmental crises have spurred significant research interest into developing efficient biological remediation technologies for sustainable contaminant and resource conversion. Integrating engineered nano-micro materials (NMMs) with these biocatalytic processes offers a promising approach to improve the microbial performance for environmental remediation. Core to such material-enhanced hybrid biocatalysis systems (MHBSs) is the rational regulation of metabolic processes with the assistance of NMMs, where a fine engineered mass and electron transfer is beneficial for the improved biocatalytic activity.

This study explores the effect of the transformation of paediatric healthcare through the implementation of the Family Mutual Aid System (FMAS) for personal medical insurance accounts, among paediatric patients at a children's hospital (Hospital A in Shanghai, China). We conducted a cohort study in the endocrinology department of Hospital A from August 2021 to July 2023 to assess the impact of the FMAS enrolment on patients' annual outpatient visits, annual outpatient expenditures, and the allocation of these costs among the Basic Medical Insurance Pooling Fund and patients' out-of-pocket (OOP) expenses, with a further subdivision into online and offline consultations. Analysis employed a weighted Difference-in-Differences approach within a fixed-effects model following Propensity Score Matching.
