Purpose: The purpose of the study is to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the clinical results of percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy (PELD) and open lumbar microdiscectomy (OLM) for the treatment of lumbar disc herniation (LDH).
Methods: Randomized controlled trials or non-randomized controlled trials published from the time when databases were built to March 2016 that compared the clinical effectiveness of PELD and OLM surgical approaches for the treatment of LDH were acquired by a comprehensive search in four electronic databases (PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science and Cochrane library). A total of 7 studies (1389 patients) were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis.
Background: The treatment of congenital scoliosis associated with split cord malformation (SCM) raises the issue of how to best manage such patients to avoid neurological deficit while achieving a satisfactory correction.
Methods: This prospective clinical study was performed at our center from March 2000 through June 2013. We enrolled a total of 214 patients (61 male and 153 female) with congenital scoliosis associated with SCM who were undergoing spinal correction surgery.
Background: The optimal length of proximal margin for Siewert type II/III adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction (AEJ) is still need to be clarified. The aim of the present study was to investigate the appropriate length of proximal margin for Siewert type II/III AEJ through transhiatal approach.
Methods: From September 2009 to December 2014, a total of 693 consecutive patients with Siewert type II/III AEJ were retrospectively analyzed.
Background: The rapid development of multi-drug resistance (MDR) process has hindered the effectiveness of advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treatments. Notch-1 pathway, which mediates the stress-response, promotes cell survival, EMT (epithelial-mesenchymal transition) process and induces anti-apoptosis in cancer cells, would be a potential target for overcoming MDR process. This study investigated the potential application of rhamnetin, a specific inhibitor of Notch-1 pathway, in anti-tumor drug sensitization of HCC treatment.

However, data was limited due to the relatively low incidence of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs). The aim of the present study was to investigate the predictive value of preoperative peripheral blood cells in prognosis of GISTs.

Planar cantilevers of NiMnGa (5M modulated martensite) ferromagnetic shape memory alloy deform into an arched shape according to theory, with a zig-zag microstructure that complies with the kinematic and magnetic compatibility between adjacent twin variants.

Objective: To examine the correlation between pulmonary arterial pressure and coronal Cobb angle of idiopathic scoliosis.
Methods: A total of 338 patients (82.
Study Design: A retrospective study.
Objective: To compare the clinical outcomes of different surgical strategy for patients with congenital scoliosis (CS) and type I split cord malformation (SCM).
Summary Of Background Data: CS associated with type I SCM is a challenge for spine surgeon because of the high potential rate of neurological compromise.
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) may influence the growth and metastasis of various human malignancies, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Therefore, the underlying mechanisms via which MSCs are able to affect malignancies require investigation. In the present study, the potential role of MSC in the angiogenesis of HCC was investigated.

Methods: Randomized controlled trials or non-randomized controlled trials published since January 1995 to October 2015 that compared the clinical effectiveness of anterior and posterior surgical approaches for the treatment of cervical OPLL were acquired by a comprehensive search in three electronic databases (PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane library). A total of 13 studies (1050 patients) were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis.
The purpose of this systematic review was to identify and assess evidence related to the efficacy of meditative movement (MM) on sleep quality. We conducted a comprehensive review of relevant studies drawn from English and Chinese databases. Only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) reporting outcomes of the effects of MM (tai chi, qi gong, and yoga) on sleep quality were taken into consideration.

Although EPAS-1 has been studied for years, its function in oncogenic transformation processes needs to be further investigated. In this study, we found that EPAS-1 would promote the growth of stomach cancer cell line BGC-823.

Therefore, the aim of the current study was to investigate the clinicopathologic features and clinical outcomes of esophageal GISTs, and to investigate the potential factors that may predict prognosis.Esophageal GIST cases were obtained from our center and from case reports and clinical studies extracted from MEDLINE.

Integration of flexibility and stretchability to nanogenerator has important research significance that enables applications in flexible/stretchable electronics, organic optoelectronics, and wearable electronics. Progress in nanogenerators for mechanical energy harvesting is reviewed, mainly including two key technologies: flexible piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs) and flexible triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs).

However, the cellular mechanism and potential application of miR-452-mediated cancer suppression remain great unknown. This study aims to identify how miR-452 acts in regulating non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) proliferation and metastasis.

However, considering the anastomotic leakage and stricture, the optimal technique for performing this anastomosis is still under debate.
Methods: Between November 2010 and September 2012, 230 patients who underwent esophagectomy with hand sewn end-to-end (ETE) CEGA for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) were analyzed retrospectively, including 111 patients underwent Albert-Lembert suture anastomosis and 119 patients underwent hybrid-layered suture anastomosis.
Objective: To compare the long-term survival and the postoperative complication morbidity of distal gastric cancer patients between distal gastrectomy (DG) and total gastrectomy (TG).
Methods: Clinicopathological data of 1140 patients with distal gastric cancer undergoing curative gastrectomy from May 2008 to April 2015 were analyzed retrospectively. A total of 992 patients underwent DG (207 patients of Billroth I( and 785 of Billroth II() and 148 patients underwent TG.
The National Comprehensive Cancer Network recommends conservative follow-up for gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) less than 2 cm. We have previously reported that the mitotic index of 22.22% of small gastric GISTs exceeded 5 per 50 high-power fields and recommended that all small gastric GISTs should be resected once diagnosed.

Isoprene is an important precursor of synthetic rubber material. In our previous study, metabolic engineered Escherichia coli strain (BW-01) was constructed and used to produce isoprene. Based on the theory of protein budget, using synthetic biology strategies including the increased copy number of genes and rare codons, we regulated the expression of key enzyme to improve isoprene production in Escherichia coli strain.

Multidrug resistance (MDR) has been recognized as a key factor contributing to the failure of chemotherapy for cancer in the clinic, often due to insufficient delivery of anticancer drugs to target cells. For addressing this issue, a redox-responsive polyphosphoester-based micellar nanomedicine, which can be triggered to release transported drugs in tumor cells, has been developed. The micelles are composed of diblock copolymers with a hydrophilic PEG block and a hydrophobic polyphosphoester (PPE) block bearing a disulfide bond in a side group.

MiR-122 is a novel tumor suppresser and its expression induces cell cycle arrest, or apoptosis, and inhibits cell proliferation in multiple cancer cells, including non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells. Radioresistance of cancer cell leads to the major drawback of radiotherapy for NSCLC and the induction of radiosensitization could be a useful strategy to fix this problem. The present work investigates the function of miR-122 in inducing radiosensitization in A549 cell, a type of NSCLC cells.
