Survivin is known for its dual biological role in apoptosis inhibition and mitotic progression. In addition to its being part of the chromosomal passenger complex (CPC), recent findings suggest additional roles for Survivin in the DNA damage response, further contributing to therapy resistance. In this study, we investigated the role of Survivin and the CPC proteins in the cellular response to irradiation with a focus on DNA replication processes.

Genomic prediction has been established in breeding programs to predict the genotypic values of selection candidates without phenotypic data. First results in wheat showed that genomic predictions can also prove useful to select among material for which phenotypic data are available. In such a scenario, the selection candidates are evaluated with low intensity in the field.

Local drug delivery systems (DDS) have become a favourable approach for the treatment of numerous diseases. Biomedical imaging techniques such as ultrahigh field magnetic resonance imaging (UHF-MRI) offer unique insight into DDS biodegradation in vivo. We describe the establishment of a 7 Tesla MRI routine for longitudinal in vivo examinations of a subconjunctival DDS for the treatment of glaucoma in a rabbit model.

Within this paper we analyzed the technical feasibility of a novel microstent for glaucoma therapy. For lowering of intraocular pressure, the flexible polyurethane (PUR) implant is designed to drain aqueous humour from the anterior chamber of the eye into subconjunctival, or alternatively suprachoroidal, space. The microstent includes a biodegradable, flow resisting polymer membrane serving as temporary flow resistance for the prevention of early postoperative hypotony.

Layer-by-layer (LbL) assembled polymer-clay multilayer thin films are known to provide transparent and flexible gas barrier. In an effort to further lower the oxygen transmission rate (OTR) of these nanobrick wall thin films, sodium chloride was introduced into montmorillonite (MMT) suspension as an "indifferent electrolyte". At pH 6.

PurposeAnalysis of microstructural alterations of corneal and limbal epithelial cells in healthy human corneas and in other ocular conditions.Patients and methodsUnilateral eyes of three groups of subjects include healthy volunteers (G1, n=5), contact lens wearers (G2, n=5), and patients with dry eyes (G3, n=5) were studied. Imaging of basal (BC) and intermediate (IC) epithelial cells from central cornea (CC), corneal limbus (CL) and scleral limbus (SL) was obtained by in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM).

Background: Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. In therapeutically refractory cases, alloplastic glaucoma drainage devices (GDD) are being increasingly used to decrease intraocular pressure. Current devices are mainly limited by fibrotic encapsulation and postoperative hypotension.

Purpose: We examined agreement among experts in the assessment of corneal subbasal nerve tortuosity.

Methods: Images of corneal subbasal nerves were obtained from investigators at seven sites (Auckland, Boston, Linköping, Manchester, Oslo, Rostock, and Sydney) using laser-scanning in vivo confocal microscopy. A set of 30 images was assembled and ordered by increasing tortuosity by 10 expert graders from the seven sites.

In this study we present the development of an injectable polymeric drug delivery system for subconjunctival treatment of primary open angle glaucoma. The system consists of hyaluronic acid sodium salt (HA), which is commonly used in ophthalmology in anterior segment surgery, and an isocyanate-functionalized 1,2-ethylene glycol bis(dilactic acid) (ELA-NCO). The polymer mixtures with different ratios of HA to ELA-NCO (1/1, 1/4, and 1/10 (v/v)) were investigated for biocompatibility, degradation behavior and applicability as a sustained release system.

Choroidal melanoma is the most frequently occurring intraocular tumor in adults. The aim of this work is to assess the potential of state-of-the art in-vivo and ex-vivo imaging modalities for the characterization of choroidal melanoma. Multimodal imaging of a choroidal melanoma was performed in a 53-year-old male patient.

Background: Introgression populations are used to make the genetic variation of unadapted germplasm or wild relatives of crops available for plant breeding. They consist of introgression lines that carry small chromosome segments from an exotic donor in the genetic background of an elite line. The goal of our study was to investigate the detection of favorable donor chromosome segments in introgression lines with statistical methods developed for genome-wide prediction.

Keratocytes are specialized, neural crest-derived mesenchymal cells occupying approximately 3% of the corneal stromal volume. They reside between the collagen lamellae and are responsible for the secretion of extracellular matrix macromolecules, thus contributing to the corneal transparency and integrity. During the regeneration process after infection, traumata and refractive surgery, the keratocytes undergo transition into divergent phenotypes, which are referred to as "activated keratocytes".

Objectives: This study was designed to examine the feasibility of ophthalmic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at 7 T using a local 6-channel transmit/receive radiofrequency (RF) coil array in healthy volunteers and patients with intraocular masses.

Materials And Methods: A novel 6-element transceiver RF coil array that makes uses of loop elements and that is customized for eye imaging at 7 T is proposed. Considerations influencing the RF coil design and the characteristics of the proposed RF coil array are presented.

Introgression libraries are valuable resources for QTL detection and breeding, but their development is costly and time-consuming. Selection strategies for the development of introgression populations with a limited number of individuals and high-throughput (HT) marker assays are required. The objectives of our simulation study were to design and compare selection strategies for the development of maize introgression populations of 100 lines with population sizes of 360-720 individuals per generation for different DH and S2 crossing schemes.

Elucidating the molecular basis of natural variation in complex traits is the key for their effective management in crops or natural systems. This review focuses on plant variation. It will first, show that genetic modifications causing major alterations in polygenic phenotypes often hit targets within an array of 'candidate genes', second, present new methods that include mutations of all effect sizes, and help exhaustively describe the molecular systems underlying complex traits, and third, discuss recent findings regarding the role of epigenetic variants, which in plants are often maintained through both mitosis and meiosis.

Confocal in vivo laser scanning microscopy is an established technique to visualise morphology of the cornea and conjunctiva, whereby the image interpretation needs experience. We report about changes of the ocular surface in the pathological conditions of infectious, metabolic and traumatic genesis and discuss their relevance. The micromorphology of the corneal epithelium and stroma in respect to pathogens (bacterial, fungal) is discussed.

Limbal disorders can lead to loss of stem cell population and deficiency in corneal integrity. The aim of this study is to describe the morphological features of this region by using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) in healthy subjects, contact lens wearers and in patients with surface disorders. On examination hyper- and hyporeflective finger-like structures were found with numerous basal epithelial cells within and in between crypts.

Introgression libraries can be used to make favorable genetic variation of exotic donor genotypes available in the genetic background of elite breeding material. Our objective was to employ a combination of the Dunnett test and a linear model analysis to identify favorable donor alleles in introgression lines (ILs) that carry long or multiple donor chromosome segments (DCS). We reanalyzed a dataset of two rye introgression libraries that consisted of ILs carrying on average about four donor segments.

Decompression sickness (DCS; 'the bends') is a disease associated with gas uptake at pressure. The basic pathology and cause are relatively well known to human divers. Breath-hold diving marine mammals were thought to be relatively immune to DCS owing to multiple anatomical, physiological and behavioural adaptations that reduce nitrogen gas (N(2)) loading during dives.
