Human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) hold promises to model and understand human diseases, including those associated with ageing. Although the plants of the genus are largely exploited by therapists in Morocco, the composition and antibacterial activities of propolis from these plants are still unknown. To address this gap, this study aimed to characterize the pollen type, the volatile compounds, and the phenolic and mineral profiles of three propolis samples collected in Morocco and evaluate their antimicrobial activities. The minimum inhibitory concentration of the propolis samples was determined by the microdilution method, and the anti-adherence activity was evaluated by the crystal violet assay.

Objective: DATASUS is the Brazilian Public Unified Health System (SUS) department responsible for providing health data that are used as a primary source of data in several studies on surgery and surgical specialties although its main limitations have not been previously reviewed. The objective of this work is to synthesize information from studies on surgery that used DATASUS systems as a data source and to identify the main gaps in this platform.

Pulmonary delivery of drugs is potentially beneficial in the context of lung disease, maximising drug concentrations in the site of action. A recent work proposed spray-dried konjac glucomannan (KGM) microparticles as antitubercular drug (isoniazid and rifabutin) carriers to treat pulmonary tuberculosis. Interest in the use of essential oils (EOs) in the biomedical and food industries have seen growing over the last decades due to their richness in bioactive compounds. The challenges in developing an EO extraction process that assure an efficient levels of monoterpenes with impact on biological activities have driven the present study, in which the EO extraction process of rosemary, lavender and citrus was performed by simultaneous hydrodistillation-steam distillation, and the influence of EO composition on biological activities, namely antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, anti-acetylcholinesterase, anti-tyrosinase, antibacterial, and antibiofilm activity, were evaluated. In our previous study the enrichment of the intestinal proteome of type 1 diabetes (T1D) children with proteins was observed, which led us to our current study that aimed to isolate and characterize species from fecal samples of T1D and control children. Repetitive sequence-based PCR (rep-PCR) was used for typing the isolated species. The antibiotic susceptibility and mucinolytic activity of the isolates was determined.

The metabolic syndrome is a complex entity comprised of multiple cardiovascular risk factors grouped in a single individual, contributing to an increased rate of cardiovascular events which goes beyond what would be expected given the impact of each individual risk factor. It is a multifactorial condition whose complete pathogenesis is not yet fully understood. Several studies have shown that not only the intestinal microbiota and dysbiosis may play a role in its pathogenesis, but also that modulating said microbiota may play a role in treating or at least ameliorating the metabolic syndrome.

Macrophages have unique surface receptors that might recognize preferentially several moieties present on the surface of infecting organisms, including in the bacterial cell wall. Benefiting from a similar composition regarding the referred moieties, polysaccharides might be good candidates to compose the matrix of drug carriers aimed at macrophage targeting, as they can use the same recognition pathways of the infecting organisms. Carrageenan (CRG), a polysaccharide extracted from red edible seaweed, is an interesting possibility for the approach of directly targeting alveolar macrophages, as its composition is reported to be recognized by several macrophage lectin receptors.

Spray-drying stands as one of the most used techniques to produce inhalable microparticles, but several parameters from both the process and the used materials affect the properties of the resulting microparticles. In this work, we describe the production of drug-loaded chondroitin sulphate microparticles by spray-drying, testing the effect of using different solvents during the process. Full characterisation of the polymer and of the aerodynamic properties of the obtained microparticles are provided envisaging an application in inhalable tuberculosis therapy.

Paucity of the survival motor neuron (SMN) protein triggers the oft-fatal infantile-onset motor neuron disorder, spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). Augmenting the protein is one means of treating SMA and recently led to FDA approval of an intrathecally delivered SMN-enhancing oligonucleotide currently in use. Notwithstanding the advent of this and other therapies for SMA, it is unclear whether the paralysis associated with the disease derives solely from dysfunctional motor neurons that may be efficiently targeted by restricted delivery of SMN-enhancing agents to the nervous system, or stems from broader defects of the motor unit, arguing for systemic SMN repletion.

Nanoemulsions exhibit a number of advantages to carry and deliver lipophilic compounds such as essential oils (EOs) due to their good stability and high surface area per volume unit. The purpose of this work was to assess the long-term stability of nanoemulsions of clove and lemongrass (LG) EOs and their principal components eugenol and citral (CI), respectively, at 3 different concentrations (2, 5 or 10 times their respective minimum inhibitory concentrations) and at two storage temperatures (1 °C and 21 °C). The initial droplet size of LG and CI-loaded nanoemulsions was below 100 nm and most of them kept droplet sizes in the nano-range until the end of storage at both temperatures.
