Estimating the prevalence of chronic infections among asymptomatic migrants: results of a screening programme in Catalonia, Spain.

Background: Migrants are disproportionately affected by several infectious diseases differing the risk within migrant groups. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of six chronic infections in asymptomatic migrants attended at primary care or specialized units where health assessments are offered.

Methods: A multicentric cross-sectional study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B and C virus, spp, and infections in the migrant population who participated in a screening programme implemented at six primary health care centres, and two infectious diseases outpatient clinics in Catalonia, Spain.

Background: For medium/small size breast, breast conserving surgery (BCS) is usually associated to poor cosmetic results. The objective of the study is to evaluate oncological safety and cosmetic results comparing the "Crescent" and the "J" mammoplasty technique and to develop an algorithm for the treatment of breast cancer located in lower quadrants in medium/small breast.

Methods: We retrospectively analysed all consecutive patients who underwent a "J" mammoplasty or a "Crescent" technique at AUSL IRCCS Reggio Emilia between 2016 and 2021.

Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is an autoimmune bullous disease, typically affecting the elderly, characterized by the production of autoantibodies directed against structural components of the dermal-epidermal junction. An association between BP and psoriasis has been described several times, but the mechanisms underlying this association have yet to be clearly defined. The pathophysiological mechanism underlying psoriasis may be implicated in the pathogenesis of BP, as psoriasis precedes BP in most cases; in particular, a promoting role has been hypothesized by biologic therapies, which may induce a switch from a T helper 1 (T1)/T17-dominant cytokine milieu, typical of patients with psoriasis, to a T2-dominant one, typical of patients with BP.

The present case report is aimed to highlight the difficulty and the reason for the delayed diagnosis of phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors, emphasizing the need of standardized protocols for diagnosis, surgery and follow-up in high-volume hospitals. The clinical signs and symptoms, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, immunohistological features were analyzed. Delayed diagnosis of phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor was primarily due to non-specific clinical symptoms such as fatigue, muscular and bone pain, and multiple fractures.

The correlation between cancer and venous thromboembolism (VTE) is solid, whereas the knowledge about cancer-related arterial thromboembolism (ATE) still needs a deeper investigation to clarify its pathogenesis. We describe two cases that represent useful hints for a comprehensive review of the thrombotic issue. A 75-year-old man with advanced rectal cancer treated with fluoropyrimidines suffered two catheter-related VTE events managed according to current guidelines.

Water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs) performing biological nitrogen removal (BNR) often require external carbon sources for meeting nitrogen discharge permit limits. This brings an additional financial burden to the facilities considering the continuous need of these external carbon sources. This paper evaluates the utilization of airport stormwater, which in the winter season is rich in aircraft deicing fluid (ADF) as an alternative external carbon source.

Clinical, epidemiological, and therapeutic hallmarks of pyoderma gangrenosum: a case series of 35 patients.

Background: Over the past few decades, advances in medical research and diagnostic tools have shed light on some aspects of pyoderma gangrenosum (PG). Nevertheless, the multifactorial etiology, pathogenesis, and optimal management strategies for PG need to be further investigated. To address these knowledge gaps and contribute to a better understanding of this complex dermatological disorder, we collected epidemiological, clinical, and therapeutic aspects of a case series of PG patients occurring in our department over the past 10 years.

Evaluation of the accuracy of a multi-infection screening test based on a multiplex immunoassay targeting imported diseases common in migrant populations.

Background: We aimed to evaluate the performance of a novel multiplex serological assay, able to simultaneously detect IgG of six infections, as a screening tool for imported diseases in migrants.

Methods: Six panels of 40 (n = 240) anonymized serum samples with confirmed infections were used as positive controls to assess the multiplex assay's sensitivity. One panel of 40 sera from non-infected subjects was used to estimate the seropositivity cutoffs, and 32 non-infected sera were used as negative controls to estimate each serology's sensitivity and specificity.
