Implementing laboratory internal audit to improve compliance and quality of care in the municipal public health system-based ambulatory care health clinics in New York city.

Introduction: System-wide laboratory internal audits are useful to help laboratories prepare for external audits in addition to being part of the ongoing program for compliance improvement and quality assurance in the laboratory to track and enhance care quality.

Methods: A formal plan was developed and a modified audit checklist was prepared by our laboratory management team, applicable and uniquely tailored for our ambulatory care clinic settings to track operational, quality, and compliance metrics according to the New York State Department of Health Clinical Laboratory Evaluation Program. Two audits were conducted 6 months apart and the conformity documented.

Looking into the Laboratory Staffing Issues that Affected Ambulatory Care Clinical Laboratory Operations during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Objective: Our New York City Municipal Public Health System-based multisite ambulatory and school-based Gotham Health clinics offer waived point-of-care tests and provider-performed microscopy to the local communities. Our Gotham Health laboratory service conducts system-wide centralized implementation, monitoring, and oversight of the POCT operations. Laboratory staffing has always been an issue for us as there is a decades-long shortage of laboratory staff, primarily licensed medical technologists and technicians, in New York, like many other states.

A case of intramural coronary amyloidosis associated with hemodialysis.

Dialysis-related amyloidosis predominantly occurs in osteo-articular structures and dialysis-related amyloid (DRA) substances also deposit in extra-articular tissues. Clinical manifestations of DRA include odynophagia, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, intestinal obstruction, kidney stones, myocardial dysfunction, and subcutaneous tumors. The pathological characteristics of DRA in the heart of hemodialysis patients have rarely been reported.

Glomerular sparing pattern in primary kidney neoplasms: clinical, morphological and immunohistochemical study.

Glomerular sparing (GS) is defined as a unique growth pattern in which tumor cells replace the majority of renal tubes and overrun intact glomeruli. This phenomenon has been well recognized by pathologists as a typical infiltrative pattern and some studies suggested it was an independent risk factor. Here, we study the clinical, pathological, and immunohistochemical features of primary kidney neoplasms with glomerular sparing pattern.

BCR-crosslinking induces a transcription of protein phosphatase component G5PR that is required for mature B-cell survival.

BCR-crosslinking triggers activation-induced cell death (AICD) selectively in the restricted stage of B-cell differentiation. We examined the transcription of a protein phosphatase subunit G5PR in immature and mature B-cells, because absence of this factor augmented cell sensitivity to AICD, associated with increased activation of JNK and Bim. BCR-crosslinking-induced G5pr transcription in AICD-resistant mature splenic IgM(lo)IgD(hi) B-cells but not in AICD susceptible immature IgM(hi)IgD(lo) B-cells.
