Nanoscale thin film coatings and surface treatments are ubiquitous across industry, science, and engineering; imbuing specific functional or mechanical properties (such as corrosion resistance, lubricity, catalytic activity and electronic behaviour). Non-destructive nanoscale imaging of thin film coatings across large (ca. centimetre) lateral length scales, crucial to a wide range of modern industry, remains a significant technical challenge.

Background: People with MS (PwMS) can experience a number of diverse needs which may be met by community-based services such as those delivered by MS Ireland (MSI), where Community Workers (CWs) provide support to PwMS on an individualised basis. However, while such support may be critical in helping PwMS adapt and cope with the challenges of living with MS, there has been little evaluation of the outcomes and impacts of this service to date. This study aimed to explore the perceived effectiveness and impacts of community work from the perspectives of both PwMS and CWs.

In understanding the nature of contrast in the emerging field of neutral helium microscopy, it is important to identify if there is an atom-surface scattering distribution that can be expected to apply broadly across a range of sample surfaces. Here we present results acquired in a scanning helium microscope (SHeM) under typical operating conditions, from a range of surfaces in their native state, without any specialist sample preparation. We observe diffuse scattering, with an approximately cosine distribution centred about the surface normal.

Resolution is a key parameter for microscopy, but methods for standardizing its definition are often poorly defined. For a developing technique such as scanning helium microscopy, it is critical that a consensus-based protocol for determining instrument resolution is prepared as a written standard to allow both comparable quantitative measurements of surface topography and direct comparisons between different instruments. In this paper we assess a range of quantitative methods for determining instrument resolution and determine their relative merits when applied to the specific case of the scanning helium microscope (SHeM).

Children born extremely preterm (EP) have poorer academic attainment than their term-born peers. There is a need to identify the specific cognitive mechanisms that are associated with poor academic attainment in preterm populations to inform the development of intervention strategies. A parallel mediation analysis was conducted with cross-sectional data from 152 EP children (< 27 weeks of gestation) and 120 term-born controls who were assessed at age 11.

Background: Malignant melanoma is rare in the pediatric population and management is largely extrapolated from adult guidelines. Adult data have shown that immediate completion lymph node dissection (CLND) does not improve overall survival in selected patients with clinically node negative, sentinel lymph node-positive disease. Current nodal management in children is unknown.

Conflict is pervasive in pediatric surgery - it is experienced during patient care, in the operating room and between colleagues. The ethical principles of autonomy, beneficience, non-maleficience and justice are firmly anchored in any discourse regarding conflict in the setting of healthcare. The authors review key features of conflict in healthcare including the effect on patient outcomes as well as implications for the ability of the surgeon and the medical team to function appropriately and safely when conflicts arise.

Airway clearance is an essential part of airway maintenance to ensure the airway lumen is protected against particulate and infectious insults. The mechanisms involved in airway clearance include intrinsic structural and cellular components that can be impaired or inhibited through developmental defects and surgical interventions. Tracheomalacia is a developmental defect of the airway that can contribute to the mechanical failure to clear the airway.

Background: Talimogene laherparepvec (TVEC) is an injectable attenuated oncolytic herpes simplex virus (HSV-1) used in the treatment of loco regionally metastatic melanoma. Lesions managed by TVEC are generally considered unresectable at time of initiation of intralesional therapy; however, a subset of patients go on to have surgical resection of loco regionally controlled disease. We sought to review our experience with surgical excision of treated lesions to offer an insight into the radiologic correlate, treatment effect, and pathological findings of intralesional TVEC therapy.

Article Synopsis
  • A study examined the use of transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) in ICU patients, finding that a third of those admitted underwent the procedure.
  • The primary reason for TTE was to evaluate left ventricular function, with most results showing normal or minor issues.
  • However, patients with abnormal TTE results had significantly higher ICU and hospital mortality rates, indicating its potential importance in predicting outcomes.
