Expression of JAK/STAT Signaling Proteins at Diagnosis and Remission in Patients with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

Objectives: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML), among other malignancies, has been linked to the deregulation of the Janus kinase/signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK/STAT) signalling pathway, which is essential for cell growth, proliferation, and differentiation. This study aimed to investigate the expression of JAK/STAT proteins at diagnosis and remission and how it affects overall survival (OS).

Methods: This is a prospective study conducted in the College of Medicine, Sultan Qaboos University.

Necrotizing fasciitis of the head and neck in era of COVID-19: a single-institution experience.

Objectives: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) of the head and neck is a critical condition, known for its severe impact and high mortality rates, often linked with diabetes, odontogenic infections, and immunosuppression. Observations from the University of Ottawa's Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery indicate an increase in NF cases since the COVID-19 pandemic began, suggesting a possible association between COVID-19 and NF. This study aims to assess the incidence of NF since the pandemic's onset and explore its association with COVID-19.

Performance of Modification of Diet in Renal Disease and Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration Equations Versus Tc-DTPA-Renogram in Assessing Kidney Function.

Objectives: To evaluate the performance of measurement of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) using Modification of Diet in Renal Disease equations (MDRD186, MDRD175) and Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) equations, in comparison with technetium-99m diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (Tc-DTPA) renogram method, the gold standard. A related aim was to correlate the three equations to estimate GFR and their impact on reclassifying the stages of CKD in adult Omani patients.

Methods: This cross-sectional study recruited two groups of patients diagnosed with CKD during a 10-month period from January to October 2021.

Base of the tongue hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma: Case report and literature review.

Hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma is an uncommon neoplasm arising in minor salivary glands. We present a rare case of hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma in the base of the tongue. We report a case of a 38-year-old female presented with a progressive history of hemoptysis and dysphagia over the course of 4 years.

Association of elevated glycated hemoglobin and obesity with afternoon napping for more than 1 h in young and middle-aged healthy adults.

Introduction: Sleep has different patterns followed worldwide and can be influenced by social, cultural, and environmental factors. Daytime napping is commonly practiced in different parts of the world with controversial results of its effect on glucose metabolism. The current study aims to examine the association of afternoon napping and night sleep duration with metabolic derangements.

Low-density lipoprotein receptor gene mutation analysis and structure-function correlation in an Omani arab family with familial hypercholesterolemia.

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is an autosomal dominant disorder typified by elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels caused by mutations in the LDL receptor (LDLR), apolipoprotein B (ApoB), or proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) genes. Previously, we reported a novel mutation in the exon-3 of LDLR gene, observed in a 9-year-old Omani Arab female. Here, we investigated the mode of inheritance of this mutation and confirmed that FH in this family is due to mutation only in the LDLR and not PCSK9 and ApoB genes.
