Article Synopsis
  • Trypanosoma cruzi is the protozoan responsible for Chagas Disease, which lacks effective diagnostic and treatment options, prompting a study of its metabolism and adaptation to different environments.
  • Recent research shows T. cruzi can utilize various carbon sources, including threonine, during growth and starvation, leading to the discovery of a pathway for threonine degradation.
  • The study identified a compound (TCMDC-143160) that inhibits a key enzyme (TcTDH) involved in threonine catabolism, providing insights into potential therapeutic targets for Chagas Disease.

Shoulder and neck concerns are prevalent musculoskeletal issues prompting medical attention, often stemming from scapulothoracic disorders that can serve as both the cause and consequence of other shoulder abnormalities. Scapular dyskinesis, fractures, benign and malignant masses, and neuropathies are frequently overlooked yet can substantially affect shoulder pain and function, particularly in athletes. Scapulothoracic disorders may lead to and/or be worsened by common shoulder abnormalities including those of the rotator cuff, neighboring bursae, and the glenohumeral articulation and labrum.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to create a treatment to speed up recovery from tissue damage caused by Bothrops jararaca snake venom using ultrasound and gold nanoparticles (GNPs).
  • - Researchers treated Swiss mice with various combinations of GNPs, ultrasound, and anti-bothropic serum after exposing them to snake venom, assessing factors like necrotic area and oxidative stress.
  • - Results showed that treatments incorporating GNPs and ultrasound significantly reduced tissue damage, enhanced healing, and improved antioxidant responses in the body.

This article presents the first results for elemental composition of 193 fragments ceramic from four sites located in Ventarrón-Collud archaeological complex, Peru. The results from EDXRF and multivariate analysis indicated statistical similarity among four groups of ceramic fragments, selected by remarkable stylistic variation, collected from different archaeological space/time contexts. The correspondence in the elemental composition of the ceramic paste of the artifacts corroborates the hypothesis that similar raw materials were used consistently throughout the entire occupation of this archaeological complex.

Article Synopsis
  • Rhinoplasty is advancing with new techniques aimed at improving both aesthetics and functionality, highlighting the importance of the facial skeleton, particularly the maxillary bone.
  • This study evaluates the effects of a costal cartilage graft in rhinoplasty for patients with premaxillary insufficiency, focusing on graft stability and complications, involving 38 patients treated between 2021 and 2022.
  • Results show effective tip support and a statistically significant improvement in the nasolabial angle without any reported complications, suggesting that costal cartilage grafts are a safe and effective option for rhinoplasty.

Objective: To carry out a comprehensive description of edentulism estimates by the macro determinants of health in 2000, 2010 and 2019 worldwide.

Methods: This ecological study analyzed data from the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) to describe the incidence rate, prevalence rate and years lived with disability (YLDs) rate due to edentulism by macro determinants of health (governance, macroeconomic policy, social policy, public policies, societal values), for 204 countries and territories. The estimates were reported as rates (cases/100,000 people), for people of both sexes aged 55 years or older.

Germination is a simple and cost-effective technology that enhances the technological, sensory, and nutritional potential of grains, making them more attractive for use in the food industry. Germinating indigenous seeds is an alternative to increase noticeability and add value to these grains, which hold social and economic significance in the regions where they are cultivated, such as creole purple pericarp corn (PPCC) from the Couto Magalhães de Minas region in Brazil. This study aimed to optimize the germination parameters of time (24-96 h) and temperature (18-32 °C) for PPCC to produce water-soluble extracts and bread.

Light energy directly affects microalgae growth and productivity. Microalgae in natural environments receive light through solar fluxes, and their duration and distribution are highly variable over time. Consequently, microalgae must adjust their photosynthetic processes to avoid photo limitation and photoinhibition and maximize yield.

NLRP3 inflammasome has a key role in chronic low-grade metabolic inflammation, and its excessive activation may contribute to the beginning and progression of several diseases, including hepatic insulin resistance (hIR). Thus, this review aims to highlight the role of NLRP3 inflammasome and oxidative stress in the development of hIR and evidence related to phytochemical intervention in this context. In this review, we will address the hIR pathogenesis related to reactive oxygen species (ROS) production mechanisms, involving oxidized mitochondrial DNA (ox-mtDNA) and thioredoxin interacting protein (TXNIP) induction in the NLRP3 inflammasome activation.
