Article Synopsis
  • Chronic nonbacterial osteomyelitis (CNO) is a rare bone disorder characterized by inflammatory lesions, diagnosed in children based on specific criteria that exclude infections and malignancies.
  • A study analyzed MRI findings in 75 children diagnosed with CNO from 2012 to 2018, revealing that pain was a common symptom, along with raised inflammatory markers in a majority of cases.
  • The results showed that boys and girls are affected similarly, with the most commonly involved bones being the femur, tibia, and pelvis; isolated back pain was notably reported in about 24% of the cases, especially among girls.

Despite a long case history, the use of protoplasts in cell biology research still divides scientists but their weaknesses can be exploited as strengths. Transient expression in protoplasts can saturate protein-protein interactions very efficiently, inhibiting the process of interest more efficiently than other approaches at gene expression level. The method described here consists of an assay providing a functional characterization of SNARE proteins in a heterogeneous population of cells, by the comparison of native and dominant negative mutant forms.

Elevated plasma cholesterol, high blood pressure and cigarette smoking are three major risk factors for coronary heart disease. Within the framework of Switzerland's participation in the multicenter study MONICA (MONItoring of trends and determinants in CArdiovascular disease), proposed by the WHO, a first risk factor survey was conducted in a representative sample of the population (25-74 years) of two reporting units (cantons of Vaud and Fribourg, canton of Tessin). A high blood cholesterol level (greater than 6,7 mmol/l) is the most common risk factor for coronary heart disease among the studied population.

Participation rates at the first (1985) MONICA survey (representative samples of the Cantons of Vaud, Fribourg and Tessin) are presented. Sample members were invited by phone or letter to the survey (physical examination, blood sample and questionnaire). Overall participation rate was 57% in the french-speaking and 78% in the italian-speaking region.
