Article Synopsis
  • * A review of surgeries at two different centers revealed that a majority of these patients (75.4%) develop post-operative fevers, but additional testing typically did not provide useful information.
  • * The research suggested that children managed under an accelerated discharge pathway had fewer PICU admissions and associated fever work-ups, indicating that such pathways could reduce unnecessary hospital stays and related complications.

For patients with localized pancreatic cancer with minimal vascular involvement, optimal survivability requires a multidisciplinary approach of surgical resection and systemic chemotherapy. FOLFIRINOX is a combination chemotherapy regimen that offers promising results in the perioperative and metastatic settings; however, it can cause significant adverse effects. Such toxicity can negatively impact some patients, resulting in chemotherapy discontinuation or surgical unsuitability.

Introduction: Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is characterized by the accumulation of amyloid-β (Aβ) in brain vessels and is a main cause of lobar intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) in the elderly. CAA is associated with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) markers of small vessel disease (SVD). Since Aβ is also accumulated in Alzheimer's disease (AD) in the brain parenchyma, we aimed to study if several single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) previously associated with AD were also associated with CAA pathology.

: The importance of body composition on cancer outcomes is of great clinical interest. Measures of body composition that differentiate fat mass from skeletal muscle mass can help redefine our understanding of body composition for cancer survival. We investigated whether the risk of all-cause and cancer-specific mortality differ by levels of total fat mass and sarcopenia status in cancer survivors.

Background: Pancreatic adenosquamous carcinoma (PASC) is a rare cancer that often presents with advanced disease and carries a grim prognosis. PASC is defined by the presence of at least 30% malignant squamous cells in the presence of malignant ductal adenocarcinoma. The utility of chemotherapy in the setting of metastatic disease is unknown.

Background: Although up to one in five cases of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) occurs in patients without cirrhosis, there is scarce literature characterizing non-cirrhotic HCC (NCHCC). Existing NCHCC research is primarily limited to surgical case series and there is a lack of data on unresectable NCHCC.

Aim: The purpose of this retrospective review was to compare the characteristics of unresectable NCHCC and cirrhotic hepatocellular carcinoma (CHCC).

Immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy represents a significant advance in cancer care. The interaction between PD-1 and PD-L1 induces immune tolerance and the inhibition of this interaction is an effective treatment strategy for numerous malignancies. Despite its demonstrated potential, immunotherapy is not clinically effective in immunogenically 'cold' tumors such as pancreatic cancer, prostate cancer and neuroendocrine tumors.

Introduction: The total mesorectal excision (TME) significantly improved rectal cancer outcomes. Radiotherapy's benefit in T3N0 rectal cancer patients managed with TME has not been clearly demonstrated. A systematic review and meta-analysis were undertaken to determine whether radiotherapy altered the risk of locoregional recurrence (LR) in T3N0 rectal cancer patients managed with a TME.

Background: Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are often treated with intralesional surgery (curettage) with or without adjuvant treatments. Side effects and conflicting results regarding recurrence rates do not suggest one clearly superior therapy. Percutaneous therapeutic options including sclerotherapy and thermal ablation have gained popularity as potential alternatives.

Importance: Cryptogenic strokes constitute approximately 40% of ischemic strokes in young adults, and most meet criteria for the embolic stroke of undetermined source (ESUS). Two randomized clinical trials, NAVIGATE ESUS and RESPECT ESUS, showed a high rate of stroke recurrence in older adults with ESUS but the prognosis and prognostic factors among younger individuals with ESUS is uncertain.

Objective: To determine rates of and factors associated with recurrent ischemic stroke and death and new-onset atrial fibrillation (AF) among young adults.

This paper investigates the occurrence and removal of 60 organic micropollutants (OMPs) including pharmaceuticals, personal care products, pesticides and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in a drinking water treatment plant (DWTP) treating raw water from the Ebro River (NE Spain). The behaviour of the OMPs was evaluated in each treatment: pre-ozonation, flocculation-coagulation-decantation-sand filtration, post-ozonation and granular activated carbon filtration. Thirty-one of the sixty OMPs studied were detected in source water with individual median concentrations below 10 ng L for all the compounds except for caffeine (64.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have been determined in waters intended for human consumption, causing concern due to their potential toxic effects in humans and the environment. Drinking water is acknowledged to be one of the major routes of exposure to PFASs, which has led to the implementation of regulatory guidelines for PFASs in drinking water. In this study a fast, simple, sensitive and cost-effective method is developed for the determination of 18 PFASs in river and drinking water.

This study evaluates the applicability of a method based on the direct injection of a large volume of water samples to identify and quantify 34 priority and emerging substances, most of them discussed in Directive 2013/39/EU on priority substances in the field of water policy, and Decision 2018/840/EU (Watch List). The method directly injects 500 µL of filtered water sample and so does not use a pre-concentration step. The method was satisfactorily validated for influent and effluent water from a drinking water treatment plant, at three concentrations (1, 10 and 100 ng L) with precision and accuracies in the range 1-17% and 71-122% respectively.
