The impact of sex on outcomes following carotid endarterectomy (CEA) and carotid artery stenting (CAS) is not fully elucidated. The aim of this study was to analyze the association between sex and outcomes of asymptomatic patients who underwent primary carotid interventions in France. This nationwide retrospective study was performed using the French National Health Insurance Information System and included asymptomatic patients who underwent primary carotid intervention over a 10-year period (1 January 2013 to 31 August 2023).

Objectives: We aimed to quantify the individual risk of antimicrobial resistance among patients with community-acquired Escherichia coli urinary tract infection (UTI) according to their antibiotic exposure over the previous 18 months.

Patients And Methods: French patients were prospectively recruited in two centers in 2015-2017. Resistance of isolates to amoxicillin (AMX), amoxicillin-clavulanate (AMC), third-generation cephalosporins (3GC), trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX), fluoroquinolones (FQ) and fosfomycin (FOS) was analysed according to previous intra-class and inter-class antibiotic exposure documented in health insurance files.

Beta-lactamases are frequently prescribed for Gram-negative bloodstream infections (BSIs). However, chromosomally encoded AmpC-producing (AE) could overproduce beta-lactamases when exposed to third-generation cephalosporins (3GCs), with a risk of clinical failure. There are few available in vivo data on the subject.

Introduction: Previous studies have shown benefits of productive art-activity on frail older adults' mental and physical health. In this study, we investigated the effects of art-producing activities in a hybrid format (in-person and online) in a context of lockdown compared with previous studies taking place in museums and their effects on wellbeing, quality of life, physical frailty, and apathy in older adults.

Methods: We conducted a randomized unicentric control trial on a sample of 126 seniors older than 65 years (mean age 71.

Article Synopsis
  • A significant majority (90%) of Alzheimer's patients experience Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD), causing challenges for both patients and their family caregivers.
  • The Nice University Hospital developed an at-home therapy program that combines non-drug treatments for patients with educational sessions for caregivers, involving home visits from psychologists three times a week.
  • Results from a study with 20 patient-caregiver pairs showed a significant decrease in BPSD and agitation, but further clinical studies and a cost analysis are needed to confirm the program's effectiveness and practicality.

Dermatophytosis is a superficial fungal infection with an ever-increasing number of patients. Culture-based mycology remains the most commonly used diagnosis, but it takes around four weeks to identify the causative agent. Therefore, routine clinical laboratories need rapid, high throughput, and accurate species-specific analytical methods for diagnosis and therapeutic management.

Objective: Apathy is present in many brain disorders, but it is also prevalent to varying degrees in healthy people. While many tools have been developed to assess levels of apathy in pathology, no standardized measure of apathy in healthy people exists.

Method: Therefore, this study aimed to validate the French version of the Apathy Motivation Index (f-AMI).

  • - The study focused on strongyloidiasis cases at an outpatient clinic in Toulouse, France, examining 69 patient records, primarily of former immigrants and veterans, with a notable 25% being asymptomatic.
  • - Skin allergies were the main clinical manifestation, with high rates of blood eosinophilia and elevated serum IgE levels, indicating an immune response to the infection.
  • - Treatment mainly involved albendazole and ivermectin starting in 1993, and success was monitored through symptom resolution and eosinophilia levels, highlighting that strongyloidiasis is often overlooked in Southwestern France.

Background: Apathy and depression are two early behavioral symptoms in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related disorders that often occur prior to the onset of cognitive decline and memory disturbances. Both have been associated with an increased risk of conversion to dementia, with a distinct neuropathology.

Objective: The assessment of the trajectories of apathy and depression and their independent impact on dementia conversion.

Recurrent cystitis is a common disease in women, mainly due to uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC). For decades, typing methods now considered obsolete suggested that relapse by the same clone is dominant over reinfection, most UPEC strains being otherwise fully susceptible to antibiotics. We aimed to update these data.

Objective: Antithrombotic strategies are currently recommended for the treatment of lower extremity artery disease (LEAD) but specific scores to assess the risk of bleeding in these patients are scarce. To fill the gap, the OAC3-PAD bleeding score was recently developed and validated in German cohorts. The aim of this study was to determine whether this score performs appropriately in another real world nationwide cohort.

Diminished interest is a core feature of apathy that shows high prevalence in people with Mild and Major Neurocognitive disorders (NCD). In the clinical setting, apathy is mainly assessed using clinical scales and questionnaires, but new technologies are starting to be employed to complement classical instruments. Here, we explored the performance of the "Interest game," a ludic application that assesses personal interests, in discriminating between persons with and without diminished interest based on the Apathy Diagnostic Criteria.

Introduction: CD4/CD8 ratio is a marker of immune activation in HIV infection and has been associated with neurocognitive performance during chronic infection, but little is known about the early phases. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between blood CD4/CD8 ratio and central nervous system endpoints in primary HIV infection (PHI) before and after antiretroviral treatment (ART).

Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of the Primary Infection Stage CNS Events Study (PISCES) cohort.

Osteoarticular infections are major disabling diseases that can occur after orthopedic implant surgery in patients. The management of these infections is very complex and painful, requiring surgical intervention in combination with long-term antibiotic treatment. Therefore, early and accurate diagnosis of the causal pathogens is essential before formulating chemotherapeutic regimens.
