The high prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), about 30% of people worldwide over 30 years old, underscores the crucial need for early screening. This study aimed to identify key predictive factors for OSA; use these factors to develop a screening equation for a population at high risk for OSA; and prospectively validate this equation's application. The study included two phases: a retrospective phase examining anthropometric data, the Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS), and the home sleep apnea test (HSAT) from 200 patients referred to the Respiratory Sleep Disorder Center at Policlinico Umberto I, Rome, Italy (January 2020-January 2023) to create a predictive equation for OSA using multivariate analysis (with the most predictive data according to scientific literature).

The objectives of this observational study were to identify radiological and arterial blood gases (ABG) differences in PEs documented by computed tomography pulmonary angiogram (CTPA) in Covid-19 pneumonia (C-19) vs cancer patients (CP).
Methods: Fifty-one patients diagnosed with PE were evaluated, 18 CP and 33 C-19.
The valorization of industrial byproducts is an emerging practice that aims to transform waste materials generated during production processes into valuable resources. In this work, a preliminary study was carried out on the thermal conversion of an industrial solid byproduct resulting from the pickling of metal surfaces, mainly containing iron (II) oxalate. The aim of this study was to assess the clinical presentation, nocturnal home sleep cardiorespiratory monitoring and therapeutic adherence to CPAP in both sexes to identify the most frequent patterns.
Methods: Data from the first visit, the nocturnal home sleep cardiorespiratory monitoring and follow-up visit of 74 OSA patients were collected.
Melanoma heterogeneity is a hurdle in metastatic disease management. Although the advent of targeted therapy has significantly improved patient outcomes, the occurrence of resistance makes monitoring of the tumor genetic landscape mandatory. Liquid biopsy could represent an important biomarker for the real-time tracing of disease evolution.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors (ICIs) lead to durable response and a significant increase in long-term survival in patients with advanced malignant melanoma (MM) and Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC). The identification of serum cytokines that can predict their activity and efficacy, and their sex interaction, could improve treatment personalization.
Methods: In this prospective study, we enrolled immunotherapy-naïve patients affected by advanced MM and NSCLC treated with ICIs.
Aim: To evaluate cytokine and soluble programmed death ligand-1 (sPD-L1) levels in the serum and plasma of cancer patients treated with immunotherapy, and to test different assays.
Methods: Three Luminex xMAP assays and two ELLA microfluidic cartridges were used to screen 28 immune-related biomarkers in 38 paired serum and citrate-theophylline-adenosine-dipyridamole (CTAD) plasma samples collected from 10 advanced melanoma or non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients at different time points during immunotherapy.
Results: Twenty-three of 28 biomarkers were detected both in serum and plasma by at least one of the assays, including IL-1β, IL-2, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12p70, GM-CSF, IFN-γ, TNF-α, VEGF, IP-10, MCP-1, eotaxin, fractalkine, G-CSF, IFN-α, IL-1RA, IL-13, IL-17A, MIP-1β and sPD-L1.

Methods: We prospectively enrolled pregnant women with a diagnosis of COVID-19 who delivered in our center between March 2020 and November 2021. Deliveries were classified, according to the Robson group classification, and according to three time periods: (1) deliveries from March 2020 to December 2020; (2) deliveries from January 2021 to April 2021; (3) deliveries from May 2021 to November 2021.

Experiments: The aggregation behaviour of N,N-dimethyl-2-propylheptan-1-amine oxide (CDAO-branched) in aqueous mixtures is investigated across the entire composition range by polarized optical microscopy, small angle X-ray and neutron scattering, electron paramagnetic resonance, and pulse-gradient stimulated echo nuclear magnetic resonance.

Female genital malformations, as the unicornuate uterus, are deviations from normal anatomy that could impair the reproductive potential of a woman or her health. We present a rare case of a 20-week spontaneous abortion in a 24 years old patient affected by a misunderstood unicornuate uterus with communicating rudimentary horn, previously diagnosed as bicornuate, and for this reason subjected to induction of abortive labor, using mifepristone and gemeprost. Following the ultrasound exam and MRI, performed due to the failure of the abortive procedure, revealed the diagnosis of unicornuate uterus with (not clear) communicating accessory horn pregnancy, then treated with laparotomy.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFColwellia psychrerythraea 34H is a psychrophilic Gram-negative bacterium, able to survive at subzero temperatures by producing a unique capsular polysaccharide (CPS) with anti-freeze properties similar to those of the well-known anti-freeze (glyco)proteins. The tetrasaccharide repeating unit of the CPS - constituted of alternating amino sugars and uronic acid moieties in a glycosaminoglycan-like fashion with an amide-linked threonine (Thr) decoration - was synthesized as an O-n-propyl glycoside. The synthesis faced some challenging features such as building up a crowded [→2)α-d-Galp(1→] moiety as well as differentiating the two uronic units for the regioselective insertion of the Thr amide only on one of them.
