This study assessed the effects of increased pre-start diet density on the metabolism, crop filling, and overall performance of broilers under cold stress during their initial 14 days of life. Using 576 one-day-old Cobb500 male chicks from 27-week-old breeders, the experiment employed a 2 × 2 arrangement, varying thermal conditions (thermoneutrality or cold stress at 18 °C for 8 h) and pre-start diet composition (21.5% crude protein, 2970 kcal/kg or 22.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed the impact of various supportive treatments on improving packed cell volume (PCV) in dairy calves infected with tick fever agents, following specific antibiotic treatments.
  • Five supportive products were tested on Girolando female calves, aged four to six months, which were naturally infected and infested with R. microplus, with evaluations made on days 0, 3, and 7 post-treatment.
  • Results indicated that while oral or intravenous vitamins and minerals improved PCV, certain tonics showed no positive effects, and only Type III iron injections significantly raised hemoglobin and PCV levels, highlighting the need for further research on iron supplementation methods.

Anthropogenic activities are the main sources of soil, air, and water pollution by metals, including cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), the metalloid arsenic (As), magnesium (Mg), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu). The goal of this study was to assess the presence and concentration of toxic (As, Cd, Pb, and Cr) and essential metals (Mg, Zn, and Cu) in the liver and kidneys from 96 free-ranging rattlesnakes (Crotalus durissus) from Minas Gerais (Brazil). Bioaccumulation of Cd and Pb were significantly higher in males and heavier rattlesnakes (those with body weight above the average of the study population).

Background: Canine T-zone lymphoma (TZL) is recognized as an indolent CD45-T cell lymphoma, with low aggressiveness and high overall survival. The diagnosis is obtained by histopathology and immunohistochemistry, but also by cytological examination of the lymph node associated with immunophenotyping. Lymphocytosis is commonly identified as around 10,000 cells/µl and may reach 30,760 cells/µl.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of 8 h of cold stress (18 °C) every day in broiler chicks during the first 7 days of rearing on crop filling analysis, yolk sac consumption, digestive and immune organs weights, and physiological metabolism at seven days and performance between 1 and 35 days. Cobb500 male broiler chickens (n = 274) were randomly assigned to two treatments. The treatments consisted of varying environmental temperatures during the first week post-housing.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the total parenteral nutrition associated with glutamine, enteral fluid therapy with or without glutamine, and fluid therapy on the acid-base and electrolyte balance of horses starved after exploratory laparotomy. Sixteen healthy male and female adult horses of mixed breed, aged between 4 and 14 years, and having a mean body weight of 248.40 ± 2.

This study assesses parasitism and pathologic manifestations in free-ranging . A total of 96 rattlesnakes from the State of Minas Gerais (southeast Brazil) were necropsied between September 2019 and February 2020. Granulomatous gastritis affected 48% (46 of 96) of the snakes evaluated, which were associated with the ascaridid nematodes sp.

Background And Aim: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is associated with a grave prognosis. A clinical assessment of kidney function can be performed based on the glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Cystatin C (CysC) can indicate the GFR or kidney function and its measurement is currently performed using immunological methods such as nephelometry, immunoturbidimetry, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays in human medicine.

Aiming at the sustainability of meat production, insects can replace traditional ingredients in the diet of poultry. Studies evaluating performance in birds have emerged to ensure this ability, but few address the health parameters of animals. This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of the inclusion of Madagascar cockroach meal in traditional diets on hematological and histopathological traits of meat-type quails.

Critically ill hospitalized dogs are subject to certain complications, being acute kidney injury (AKI) a common one. Early diagnosis is crucial, and Cystatin C (CysC) is a reliable and early biomarker. The International Society of Renal Interest (IRIS) states that AKI severity can be assessed by mild changes in creatinine serum levels or reduction of urine output that cannot be considered biomarkers of renal injury but failure or insufficiency.

Several direct or indirect methods can be used to assess immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentrations in calves, which evaluates the transfer of passive immunity (TPI). Radial immunodiffusion (RID) is the gold standard method to measure serum IgG in bovines. Previous studies have shown that colostrum provides several molecules in addition to immunoglobulins, which play an important role in the passive immunity of the calf.

The Horse Agribusiness Complex is an important activity in the Brazilian agricultural sector. Mangalarga Marchador (MM) is the most numerous breed of horses in Brazil and its temperament and gait characteristics (4-beat stepping gait) allow for the constant growth of the breed and the performance of vs. equestrian activities.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) at the end of progesterone (P4) treatment on follicular and luteal characteristics during transition period (TP) and reproductive breeding season (RP). A total of 13 crossbred mares were distributed in two experimental groups in the spring and summer (n = 26). The animals received intravaginal P4 (1.

Food restriction is part of the life cycle of many fish species; however, nutritional deficiency may negatively influence gametogenesis and gonadal maturation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of food restriction on the spermatogenesis of Nile tilapia. For this, adult males were submitted to starvation and refeeding cycles (alternating periods of starvation and feeding) for 7, 14, 21, and 28 days.

The aim of this study was to investigate the daily rhythms of hematological, biochemical and enzymatic parameters of the blood of a nocturnal model of fish (Lophiosilurus alexandri) bred in the laboratory (F1). Thirty-six juveniles were stocked in six tanks of a recirculation aquaculture system for 20 days. The fish were exposed to a light:dark cycle of 12:12 h and were fed 1% of biomass twice a day with commercial diet.

The role of cats in the epidemiological cycle of leishmaniasis remains unclear. To better understand the occurrence of leishmaniasis in cats, we studied the frequency of Leishmania in serum samples of 100 cats living in an endemic region for canine and human leishmaniasis by serological, parasitological, and molecular methods. Of the 100 cats, 54 were seropositive for Leishmania antibodies by immunofluorescence antibody test.

Infectious diseases can cause deleterious effects on bird species, leading to population decline and extinction. Haemosporidia can be recognized by their negative effects on host fitness, including reproductive success and immune responses. In captivity, outbreaks of haemosporidian infection have been observed in birds in zoos and aviaries.
