The neuroimmunoregulation of inflammation has been well characterized. Entamoeba histolytica provokes an inflammatory response in the host in which macrophages and neutrophils are the first line of defense. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of the 220 kDa lectin of Entamoeba histolytica on stimulation of human macrophages and neutrophils, especially the secretion of cytokines and the relation of these to neurotransmitters.
