Monocytes and neutrophils expressing myeloperoxidase occur in fibrous caps and thrombi in unstable coronary plaques.

Background: Myeloperoxidase (MPO) -containing macrophages and neutrophils have been described at sites of plaque rupture. The presence of these cells in precursor lesions to acute rupture (thin cap atheroma, or vulnerable plaque) and within thrombi adjacent to ruptures has not been described, nor an association with iron-containing macrophages within unstable plaques.

Methods: We studied 61 acute ruptures, 15 organizing ruptures, 31 thin cap fibroatheromas, and 28 fibroatheromas from 72 sudden coronary death victims by immunohistochemical and histochemical techniques.

Multiple aneurysms of aortocoronary saphenous vein grafts with fatal rupture.

Aortocoronary saphenous vein graft (SVG) aneurysms are rare, and are usually asymptomatic and detected incidentally. Spontaneous rupture of SVG is rare and imaging data are few. We report on a 39-year old man who was admitted to the hospital with hematemesis 10 years after aortocoronary bypass surgery.

Bronchioloalveolar carcinoma arising in a congenital pulmonary airway malformation in a child: case report with an update of this association.

An 8-year-old girl was evaluated for a mass in the left pulmonary lobe. Her clinical history was remarkable for an intermittent dry cough since the age of 2, with recurrent episodes of purulent sputum and fever. She underwent left lower lobectomy, which was found to be a bronchioloalveolar carcinoma arising in a type 1 congenital pulmonary airway malformation at pathologic examination.

Prevention of HIV infection among migrant population groups in Northeast Brazil.

HIV infection is spreading among the poor, women, and migrant communities in the interior of Northeast Brazil. The research focused on different configurations, beliefs, representations, and forms of social organization of behavior thought to be associated with the population's capacity to efficiently follow AIDS prevention measures. Participants located in neighborhoods known for having large migrant populations were identified by Family Health Program Workers in Fortaleza and Teresina.
